A great trailhead with easy access to the Gore Range Trail. Following the gore Range Trail to the left of the Rock Creek Trailhead allows you access to Kettle ponds which are picturesque :-) if you go straight on the Rock Creek Trail you can get to boss mine and right on the gore Creek Trail will take you to Boulder Lake. There's a lot of beetle kill in the forest but you can see a lot of new little trees popping up :-) there is parking at the end of 1.5 miles of bumpy dirt road that's somewhat run it out and one would probably want decent clearance on their vehicle to get up there. Our hiking guide said it was 1.5 miles from the upper trailhead parking to Boss mine, but it’s more like 2.5. You walk along a ridge past some beautiful meadows. Some of the area is shaded and damp so be sure to bring bug spray. I would have given it 5 stars except for the 1 1/2 mile 4WD road to the upper trailhead parking lot. Opted for a hike to another lake in the area.. AMAZING! GPS clocked just over 26mi and 4,800ft in elevation out and back, with a little exploring. The mosquitos were some of the worst that I have experienced in the lower 48....
