Hyzer Pines, what a perfect name for a disc golf course. It is where I cut my teeth with tournament play in the early mid 2000s. A challenging course with long throws (in excess of 500 feet drives) in a heavily wooded ponderosa forest. It’s easy to loose discs in the sage. And many drives require scouting.
It’s a destination disc golf course for advanced players. Definitely a 5 star rating for what it used to be.
But....
Baskets and pads are in good condition but aging. It seems little updating of infrastructure has been done since the early days of the course.
Over the years, building has taken place in the neighborhood cutting into the course with pavement and parking lots. A bus barn. A skate park.
The course map has not been updated, and redirection had not been clearly marked. Many pads have a metal identifier AND a paper identifier with differing hole information. Throwing to 7, or is that 16? A derelict pad confuses the search for 8. Follow the orange ribbon tied to trees. Is there a 10 basket? A derelict pad for 13 makes you think you have to throw over an active logging project. Ignore, and walk around the pile to a newer 13 pad. Oh, there’s 7 between 16 and 17. Is there a basket for 18? 🤷🏻♂️🧐
Unmarked double pads and the lack of correct mapping makes what was a fantastic difficult course frustrating for the...
Read moreMy current favorite course in the Bend area. Lots of technical shots through trees will keep you on your toes. The holes past #7 have recently (as of 11/02/19) have been redone to accommodate the building of a bus barn/yard by the school district. The new holes are a little light on signage at the moment but I'm sure things will get clearer over time. Photo is of the new map which isn't installed at the course yet. Late 2020/Early 2021 NOTE: Holes #10-12 have changed a bit from the map I posted. I haven't seen an updated one...
Read moreVery difficult to navigate from hole to hole and the thick underbrush makes losing a disk very easy if you don't have a good spotter on almost every hole. It took us twice as long to play this course as it would other woods courses. There was also construction going on that made it impossible to play one of the holes while we were there. Several good technical holes but, unfortunately not worth the...
