A really beautiful place with some very good hiking trails. I hiked to the waterfall, but due to the recent dry weather, there was not much of a flow. Regardless, the scenery at the falls was still worth the hike. The rock formations and the bluffs were very interesting. A hike down the trail took me about 3 miles into the woods. The trail starts pretty well compacted, but as you travel it, the trail narrows and there's rocks, roots, and lots of up and down travel. It was nothing too strenuous, but I was huffing and puffing in a couple of spots. There are some pretty steep areas just off the trail, so doing it with young children could be a little concerning. Really a beautiful woods with a mix of pines, oaks, and beech trees. Heard lots of acorns dropping throughout the hike. A few people were encountered, unfortunately one couple was letting there dog run unleashed, against park rules, and caused some angst among some leashed dogs. Don't know why some dog owners can't respect the rules or other people. I don't hike to see your dog. Otherwise it was a beautiful place, highly...
Read moreTrailhead for Slippery Rock Gorge Trail with ample parking and also a .5 mile easy hike to waterfall. I hiked the gorge trail with my dog about 4.5 miles toward Eckert bridge and then returned for 9 mile total (hiked from bridge end last time). This end of trail is more dirt and less rocky but still challenging rugged terrains to cover. The other end is far more rocky and rugged. It's my favorite hike but not for the weary as there are steep ascents and decents, some very narrow sections along steep drops, and many trip hazards. That being said, it's wonderful if you have the stamina and are sure footed, but you will feel this one in your muscles after. I didn't visit the waterfall this trip but the trail looked to be a very easy, short walk. Lead another hike with 11 people and was enjoyed by all. Well...
Read moreIt's a short but pretty hike to the Hollow, with lots to see and do along the path. There's all sorts of foot bridges crossing the little streams, and numerous places to just sit and take it all in. Also a great trail for dogs to get used to nature and playing in the streams, especially the Hollow.
The Hollow is also beautiful, and a great spot to just let your dog play in the waters. Signs do say to keep dogs leashed, but once in the Hollow, if you're alone, there's nowhere else they can really escape to if they're well-trained.
Best to wear water shoes when stepping down into the Hollow as the bottom of the stairs have a "rock path" but more likely than not, it's ankle...
