Well worth the stop if you're anywhere near the north/central area of Kansas or southern Nebraska! Keep an eye out - there's not many signs and you can miss the dirt road you need to turn off of. It's out in the middle of nowhere (called "smacked dab in the middle") but the town of Lebanon is only 2 miles away where you can eat, find the visitor's center inside a small restored gas station, go the bathroom, etc. In the small grocery store on main street, they have postcards & stickers, etc. to buy souvenirs to show you were there. At the GEO CENTER site, there's several markers, pavilion with picnic tables, a closed hunter's motel behind it all, a chapel (if the door is closed, it's unlocked so you can go in), flowers, flags, signs, a bulletin board with faded but interesting history displayed, etc. Although you will be surrounded by crops, there is a construction site down one road that makes noise and workers are there and then the town nearby. *SPECIAL NOTE: To those posting bad reviews about this spot because it only covers the "lower 48" and not all 50 states (i.e. where's Alaska and Hawaii?), if they did their homework or simply checked geography, they would learn that there is a GEO CENTER for all 50 states located in BELLE FOURCHE, SOUTH DAKOTA. You can visit that site on a narrow dirt road next to a cattle field and then also there's a nice museum and a large formal stone marker in the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIt's a quiet and simple spot. I visited on a Saturday morning and was the only one there, which made for a peaceful experience. I enjoyed listening to the birds singing and even heard an old barn owl hooting. The location is on a hill with nice views, and the grounds are well-maintained, featuring various trees and bushes surrounded by pastures and fields.
No administration fee. Thereās a shelter with two picnic tables, an extra picnic table, and a couple of grills available. There's also a small, accessible chapel, a monument, and trash cans, plus over a dozen parking stalls. Thereās a single piece of playground equipment, but keep in mind that there are no restroom facilities on site; you'll need to go into town for that, which is a couple of miles away. Overall, it's a decent place for a quiet outing, but plan ahead for...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreVery nice. It was a satisfying feeling to be here. Situated higher than the surrounding area, location offers wonderful vistas, perfect for scenic/panoramic pictures. The location has a covered pavilion with picnic tables. There are permanently placed charcoal grills as well. Great place to have a cookout and/or picnic. Wish we had planned to have a hot dogs & burgers cookout here. Great conversation topic ". . . yes we had a cookout at the heart of the nation." What does that mean Bob? " We had a cookout at the exact center of the 48 contiguous states aka "the heart of the continental USA". Be sure to add your name to the guest register box inside the chapel. If you need an addition to your bucket list, this SHOULD be on it. MUST...
