Love that this park is dogfriendly. It has been over 2 years since I visited and so happy that I came back. I forget how beautiful the water view is. The river trail is paved and the boardwalk thru the marshland has a great view. The Indian village is completely compared to the last time I was here they were working on it. The park had a better layout than I remembered. Definitely explore the water area along the river trail and down at the end where Pattersons Point is.
At Pattersons Point... There is a parking lot here with a group of white building. I took the trail to Patterson's Point and the walk was about 1/2 mile from the parking lot. Be sure to spray for bugs especially for those who always get bug bites. I got out of the car for just a few minutes and got 2 bug bites. I did spray myself with OFF deep woods shortly after and that definitely helped. In the trail, just passed the iron gates is the retreat and before the iron gates to the right is the archeology site that I didn't explore because it is too hot for my little ones. As I got closer the Patterson's Point the air didn't smell fresh at all. The little beach area was nice and the view was amazingly beautiful. There is a boardwalk that goes in front of the old cabin and ends at the pier with another amazing view. It's definitely worth checking it out. For those who have challenges in walking or mobility, it looks like you could drive there and the area at Patterson's Point is wide enough to park and turn around.
I really like this park a lot. It has a museum in the visitors center, and the area along the water has a nice beach area with a beautiful view of the water. This park is fairly large, and there was a wedding there when I visited. It is also dog friendly, and if you are bringing your dog(s), be sure the dog has flea/tick treatment. The lady at the visitor's center warned me about the park having a lot of ticks, and she was very friendly. Luckily for me, my dog didn't pick up any. We walked the trails, and I enjoy the beach area the most. I like the Woodland Indian Village. I would...
Read moreThis place has way too much to offer for me to cover in this review but I highly recommend this park for several reasons. Just a beautiful park to explore which will take hours if not a couple of trips to really take it all in. Archeological sites, a museum, Maryland archeological conservation laboratory that is open on certain days, interactive educational programs, local events like dog events and Pyro jam (the best firework show I’ve seen). Plenty of hidden little beaches and a couple of larger beaches to explore. Plus a place to launch your own kayaks. A great place to take the dog which I do almost every time. It seems like almost weekly classes to attend but again you need to check out their websites because there is no way to cover everything this place offers. The historical Patterson home is still standing in great shape. If you walk past that there is a nice beach and large pier to walk down. It was also a great place to take our family photos. Be careful when you are driving in what I call the tunnel of trees as so many stop to take photos. On the other side of the park they have the woodland Indian village setup which is great for kids to see how the natives lived. Just a fun, beautiful and educational...
Read moreThis park has quite a variety of things to offer and is a great place to walk your dog. On the water side there is a nice small sandy and pebbly beach where you can put a kayak in, although most of the beach is submerged at high tide. You can still walk around it though. You can also put a kayak in at the mouth of St Leonard Creek by the old beach house. From there it's easy access to go up sent Leonard Creek, from the beach on northern side you can go up river a little bit and there's some neat coves. The trails in the park are really open, multiple ways to do loops and you can get a few miles in if you walk the whole park. The wooded trail is really nice but best to avoid in the summer due to ticks and other unwelcome biting insects. The more heavily wooded trail on the south side along the river can be too infested in summer also. They've done a really nice job with the heritage and historical information around the park, especially as it relates to native people's settlements and early American history. Hours are good too. Only improvement I can suggest is it would be nice if the bathrooms in the pavilion were...
