The Cedar River is a gorgeous place to canoe, kayak, or even SUP ‐— as long as you stay on the board. The river bottom is not solid, and we do have big snapping turtles. There's no place to stop and get out along the way. It's pure wetlands. The best time to see wildlife is early morning or late afternoon. I regularly see a variety of birds. muskrats, beavers, and turtles.
On a sunny day, it can get hot out there, and there's no shade. Plan accordingly. The trip from the launch point to Lake Leelanau takes around 1.5 hours at a leisurely pace. Strong paddlers can do it in less time, but racers might miss the wildlife. Paddling back upstream is about the same, as the current is really slow, but a brisk wind will slow you down. Nothing out there to shield you from the wind.
