This is the remnants of an old Civil War earthen wall fort. If you do some research, you will find that it is one of many designed to protect Washington DC from invasion by the Confederate army. The Potomac Heritage Trail runs through the parking lot so it is easy to pick up in either direction. The trail is in good condition but some of the smaller trails off of it can get overgrown in the summer. It is a great place to go for hiking and the fort is interesting if you like historic sites. Quiet and very little people go here. Picnic tables are run down and very little maintenance on trials or other remnants of the civil war. If your looking for a place to get away and just think. This place isn't frequented a lot but don't expect much or facilities. Small birds and animals are very busy here and you will get to enjoy a little piece of nature. Nice little outdoor escape from the city, though you can hear cars on either Chain Bridge or the GW Parkway from any given spot. The sign indicates a circular trail around the old fort, but we never could find a trail that didn’t dead end. There are no trail markings to speak, so it’s a bit of a guessing game.
