I have lived in Michigan my entire 26-year life (at this point) and NEVER knew Northern Michigan had a family owned zoo, let alone one this extensive, family-friendly, and awesome.
Where do I begin? Perhaps with the parking: very close to the road, unassuming but by no-means difficult to find, with plenty of space.
Next, the line was short but the place had a healthy amount of visitors. The owners and staff we very kind. The cost per adult is $15, which in my opinion, for what we realized we got to see, was a smokin’ deal. And for another $5 we got a small sand bucket full of cut carrots to feed the various animals.
The animals they had, to name a few: Pot Belly pigs, muntjac deer (look them up; I’d never heard of them), fallow deer, red deer, bengal and Siberia tigers, a mature full grown African lion, a black bear, a Camel, spider monkeys, Guinea pigs, tortoises, various goats, ponies, kangaroos, prairie dogs, Coatimundis (a South American raccoon mixed with an anteater critter), a Bearded Dragon, numerous South American birds, donkeys, Capybara, Kookaburra (kingfisher bird), Lemurs. And the list goes on. In short, bring some sunscreen, your lunch (they have a nice, covered eating area inside the gates), and excitement, and this place will not disappoint! Perfect for a young married couple like my wife and I. But also great any sized family with or without kids, looking for a large zoo amount of animals, for crazy cheap prices, without all the big city...
Read moreGod knows I love a good zoo. And what makes a good zoo? Im glad you asked- good care of the animals, variety, visibility, and activity. This zoo highly met all four. Now when I first heard of this zoo- I expected a tiger king like experience (carol baskin definately did it). But to my surprise, it was so much more wonderful and legit. They had a very surprising variety of animals, and even many animals I had never heard of before (and boy were they cute). I mean there's even a white siberian tiger! There's only 500 in the world and one is in a small rural area of Michigan!?! Wild! Now onto visibility... its a hot day when animals are usually less active, but we were able to see every animal in the exhibits and there was no question as to whether or not any of the exhibits were empty (yes Detroit zoo, I am calling you and your "beaver exhibit" out). They had so many activities for kids and you could feed almost every animal! The exhibits were clean, the animals looked healthy, and staff were kind and friendly.
We absolutely loved it! Highly recommend, especially...

Roscommon Zoo is awesome!! The owners, Andy and Rochelle, have created a wonderful place and I can't recommend visiting more emphatically.
The 20 acre Zoo is perfectly maintained and the amount of animals you get to see and interact with is both abundant and wonderful.
I was very impressed with how Andy and Rochelle take time to share specific details on each animal as well as their story of how they acquired the Zoo. The customer service is splendid and the quaint atmosphere of the self-guided tour is very relaxing.
Roscommon Zoo is perfect for families, especially those with small children. Watching our 8-year old daughter feed the goats, miniature horses, Emu's, pot belly pigs, calf's, Alpacas, and donkeys was delightful.
They have a bear, lion, camel, lemur, kangaroos, peacocks, sloths, monkeys...I could go on and on.
We spent two hours at this great place and loved every minute.
Go see...
