This State Historic Site is a one of a kind place to visit for a step back into history. This is the only site in SC where it has a well preserved battle field from the Civil War. It gives information from both the Confederate and Union side of the war. Although short, it's still a great history lesson for kids and adults. You can get a tour from your well knowledgeable park rangers. There are also trails including a nature trail that has a fun scavenger hunt, my husband and I actually did the hunt ourselves! Read moreOn Friday evening my husband, friends and their children all drove up to rivers bridge to start gaze. It's the closest dark sky area to us and we were so so excited. I was aware the park would be closed so we wound up parking on the corner and playing in the field right outside the gate. About an hour after we planted ourselves one of the wonderful park Rangers came up and asked what we were up to and told us he'd leave the gate open in case we needed to use the bathrooms and he'd come back and lock up later. Read moreRivers Bridge was the only organized resistance to the Union forces under Sherman in South Carolina. The battlefield trail has adequate signage to describe the 2 day battle. On site are the preserved remnants of the Confederate earthen fortifications. Also at the site is the location of the Confederate field hospital. Now a memorial park with the graves of the Confederate dead as well as from later wars. A little off the beaten path but well worth the visit. Usually quiet, restroom at office.
