It’s a decent 60 mins hike. We started at the wrong side but if you started from the correct side, it would be a step hike up and slow hike down. Overall about an hour depending on your speed. It may take longer if you walk slow. Also you can only do the small loop since the long loop is closed for peregrine falcon conservation as of June 2023. So unsure about how long the long loop will take but the short loop is a good hike! Beautiful mountain tops and less traffic! You can probably have the mountain too for yourself for a good period of time! We were here for a while and no one showed up

We followed a firelane out to the cove. This was an easy grade with plenty of width, family friendly. The beach was lovely with pebbles and Loons in the water. We attempted to hike further north around the cove, but the granite block jumble was too difficult. We did the Flying Mountain trail back to the parking lot. It was very well marked with blue blazes, difficult in very short sections, but very well laid out with granite steps or natural granite features.

A moderate 1.5 mile looping trail with rocky steps, no scrambles, multiple vistas overlooking the Somes Sound, a minor mountain peak, and a small pebbled beach. We did it with a baby and a 3 year old. I recommend going counterclockwise to get the difficult parts done while the kids have energy, as the path back from the beach is wide and flat. You could skip the mountain and just do a 1-mile out-and-back to the beach even with a stroller.

Perfect trail to have it all: the view, the reward at the beach, and an easy and quick return. It’s a loop that you should be started climbing the trail stairs, until you reach the mountain top for a look at the harbor, then descent toward the beach to rest and return by the gravel path toward the parking area. It takes about 1h30 going slowly. The return is about 20 mins on the gravel path.

This is a nice trailhead to access a number of short to moderate hikes. We chose to do a quick hike up to the summit of flying mountian and for the little effort exerted (.6 mile round trip) we gotta great view of the bay, and the "cottages" along the shore. This is a fantastic hike when short on time or just looking for great views with little effort.

Flying Mountain has great views for not that much work. A gentle walk down to a rocky shoreline, to a good climb to the summit for an overview of the sound. We had toured Islesford in the morning, and hiked Flying Mountain in the afternoon. We had views from the surface of the water to overviews from the summit. A unique perspective.
