⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ in all ways.
We stayed in July, 2025 at Cooper's Rock Campground in the new McCollom section.
The entire area is beautiful and the new section (McCollom) is very nice. Lots of trails throughout, from a more "easy" hike and for those who want to have a more difficult hike.
We had site #40 which i would not recommend. There is too much of a pitch and that made it difficult to level the camper. The site was in total sun and was HOT till about 5pm or so each day. Really heated up the camper. But our relatives had site #39 and it was a very nice, level and shady site.
The new bathroom is the nicest bathroom I have ever seen in a campground. There are six private "bays", each with a toilet, sink, baby changing table and shower. Very clean. Hot water! The only con is that the bays/restrooms are not designated for either male or female and instead are open for anyone to use. Personally, i didnt like that and would rather have bathrooms designated for either women or men.
There is no playground in the camping areas, and no pool, and pretty much nothing for the kids to do. I did not see a nature center either.
There is the Trading Post camp store and unless you have a bike or want a very long walk, you'll need to drive to it. I recommend stopping by! It's a cool little store with camping and hiking supplies, gift shop type items and a refrigerator full of ice cream bars.
There is a playground near the Trading Post.
I recommend the trail near the Trading Post (I don't remember the name of the trail), as it is easy and leads to an overlook with stunning views. And don't forget to stop and get a picture in the infamous "Almost Heaven" swing along the trail.
We dropped by and checked out the new A-frame cabins that are being built. Wow. Very nice.
Employees throughout were helpful and pleasant.
Dump station is easy in & out.
The campground is easy to get to and well maintained. We will be back.
As a side note, if you like vintage or antiques, and if you're looking for something to do, I would suggest a drive into Masontown and going to the Masontown School Antique Mall. It is an old elementary school filled with antique and vintage items. Definitely...
Read moreThis place has the most unreasonable and rude forest service workers! Though it is listed here as 24 hours, you will be charged $35 for parking here!
We got in late in need of a parking lot to rest in. One forest service worker came around midnight and told us if we stayed multiple nights we would have to pay for camping. Since we are in a self-contained vehicle, just resting for the night in a PARKING LOT, NOT A CAMPGROUND, that we could stay in the parking lot. But in the morning, another forest service worker came by demanding $35!
After I explained that the other guy said it was cool, he would not back down. I asked him to show me the signs that said we couldn't park in the parking lot or that we would be charged for camping after the fact if we did so. Those signs did not exist; he only referred signs about the campground that were further into the park than the parking lot we were in (so we would not have driven past them on our way to the parking lot).
I have never heard of a place demanding payment for services that were not used, without any type of disclosure of required payment, after the fact. I feel like I am being swindled in a Roald Dahl book. Even if there was a fee for parking in a parking lot, $35 is extreme! I would have not had a problem paying a small fee for access to the forest, but $35 to PARK! We didn't use a toilet or a water fountain or anything! We didn't even get to hit the trails in the morning before they came with this nonsense.
Great job welcoming folks to...
Read moreDefinitely one of the nicest State Parks in the upper eastern'ish area. There are ample camping areas, cabins for those who don't like to camp, but do enjoy the outdoor'sy experience! Gift shop available, plenty of grills in the picnic area too. Perfect place for family reunions or other occasions when entire families get together for rare, momentous celebrations marking life milestones!! There are a wide variety of trails for the serious hiker or for leisurely strolls which are clean and we'll marked to prevent getting lost!! I highly recommend ALL folks in the area to take advantage of this AWESOME State Park that Boasts an elevation of just over 2,000ft. The Rock City trail is so awesome and definitely unique as the trail runs along a VERY LARGE CREVAS with huge boulders all around on the one of a kind trail!! This over 12k acre State Forest that includes Cooper's Rock is so large it includes Monongalia and Preston Counties. The main overlook which is ADA compliant sits at 2,064 Ft. above sea level and has Breath-takingly 360° views of the Historic Cheat...
