Wiseman’s View was absolutely unforgettable. My wife Reina and I drove up from Charlotte with our neighbors, Raj and Anaya, who recently moved here from India. They had never seen the North Carolina mountains like this before, and Wiseman’s View was the perfect introduction. The drive up is bumpy—definitely a rough gravel road for about four miles—but if you take your time, it’s 100% worth it. We made it in a standard SUV without any issues.
Once you park, there’s a short, paved walk through the woods—just enough of a stroll to feel like an adventure but totally accessible for anyone, even in casual shoes. As soon as the trees opened up and we stepped onto the overlook, the view took our breath away. Linville Gorge stretches out like something from a painting, with Table Rock and Hawksbill towering in the distance. Our friends said it reminded them of the valleys back home, but on a much bigger, more rugged scale.
There are two stone observation decks, both built safely and thoughtfully. One is more open with that “edge of the world” feel, and the other is more accessible and shaded. We sat on the benches just soaking it all in—no phones, no talking, just the sound of wind and the view. For a moment, we all stood there in silence, just feeling how big and beautiful this part of the world is.
It’s amazing how close this is to Charlotte—it makes for the perfect day trip. We left around 10 AM, packed a cooler, and were back before dinner with a full day of memories. I’d recommend bringing a light jacket or sweatshirt; the breeze at the overlook can catch you off guard even in warmer weather. And plan for that slow drive in—don’t rush it, enjoy the journey.
This was more than just a hike or a viewpoint. It was a moment of connection—with nature, with friends, and with the place we all now call home. If you’re in the area, or even a few hours out, make the trip. It’s one of those quiet, powerful places you’ll be thinking about long...

Trust me on this... spending some time driving to a car rental place (some distance away) will be worth your trip. While you are at it do not forget to visit table rock hike on other side of the gorge (also off road but 99% better condition road)
A lot of people here complain about how bad the road is. Yes it is bad. It is bad even when its dry. Entire Old Hwy 105 is about 13 miles long north to south, of which probably 12.5 miles are "doable" in your average Toyota corolla. It is the other mileage you have to worry about. High grade, very rough, huge ruts, divots, steps in the terrain, loose gravel and soft sand. That applies both ways, north and south, depending which way you come up.
If traveling from North due to south, it is a 3-4 mile ride on a road with high gradient in bunch of places that also turn and have 1-2ft holes going up.
If traveling from South due north, you are going to be deceived by a pretty drive from Lake James until you have to scale the alps on this ridiculous part of road. Road grade is very gentile all the way to Wiseman's overlook but those few parts are Gnarly as heck.
Closest place to rent is about 35 minute ride in any direction. Zero cell signal in mountains so reserve in advance and show up on time to rental place or else they will give your car to someone else.
We were on time crunch so our experience of overlook was short lived but spectacular. View from Table Rock hike on other side of the gorge is out of this world too.
Is $80 vehicle rental worth the trip out...
Read moreIn My Opinion: Wiseman's View is North Carolina's #1 Vista & Panorama. There is none better; it's worth the drive no matter where you're travelling from & a MUST SEE when in the Linville Gorge area or cruising the parkway
Its a BIGG FAV of mine for meteor showers - not only is it DARK but there is the possibility of seeing the BROWN MT LIGHTS tooooo
(Brown Mt is in the vista between Tablerock & Hawksbill)
North Carolina's Grandest Canyon: The LINVILLE GORGE is 1500+ feet deep at Wiseman's View. If the Empire State Building were placed in Linville Gorge you would look down on that building's spire. Charlotte's tallest building is 871'
3rd Week October 2021: i tried making this trek but The County Line Road (from the top side) was washed out & impassible at the ridge crest for my toyota corolla. should be easy to transverse for anything with more ground clearance & as usual 4WD probably isnt needed. (worst condition ive ever seen that section of road)
*Coming up Old-105 (The County Line Road) from the lake 4WD may come in handy; as usual
10.18.22 road to wisemans from the top (183) is starting to get challenging for low vehicles up & over the ridge crests. i made it in a corolla but i had to pick my path.
some scraping, tar & gravel would do the usual problem...
