This is such a fun stop! If you're driving up 95 this would be a great pit stop to get out and stretch your legs while enjoying a piece of south carolinas untouched Cypress Tree forest. The entire "hike" (its more like a walk) is an elevated boardwalk above the swamp. There are tons of animals that call this place home, and when you buy your tickets the guy at the counter will tell you which ones to look out for. A leisurely walk would make the entire route take maybe 2 hours, I walked it in about an hour. It's a two mile loop with an optional offshoot to an overlook of the lake. They have synchronized fireflies in May with tickets first come first serve, not a lottery like congaree. The women's bathroom has a baby changing station. I do believe they have RV parking but don't go off this review, give them a call to make sure before you pull your rig down here.

Id call this kid friendly, every time I've come I've brought my infant son and we both have a blast! The boardwalk is almost completely flat.

They do have tours, including kayak tours and guided boardwalk tours, age limit is 12yo for the kayak tour

All in all this is worth a stop...

Spectacular and Serene!

The entire 1.75 mi. path is on a lovely wooden boardwalk, perfect for people in wheelchairs or who have difficulty moving (there are no steps, except to go up the observation tower). For $10 this is an amazing place (plus that donation helps maintain the boardwalk and the preserve!) Beautiful bird calls, some turtles, skinks, dragonflies, snakes, mayflies, carpenter bees, alligators, minnows all showed up while I was there. Other critters are tracked day by day on a board at the opening center. Lots of sitting spots and rain shelters.

I went in late April. I met a total of ONE mosquito! (In 3 hours!) Bring your binoculars if you have them! (I didn't.) So slow! Look, listen, relax! This is a beautiful mesh of human ingenuity (boardwalks) and natural beauty (the swamp). Absolutely worth a trip from either Columbia...

This was a fun walk! It probably took about an hour to walk slowly through the entire loop. The entire walk is on a boardwalk, so it makes it easy if you have kids or a stroller. The sights are mostly marsh, trees, and a small lake at the end. I’m sure that during the summer months there are plenty of animals to see, however, during this cold day, I really did not see any. My 3 star review is more reflective of my own experience today, but I’m sure on another day it would have been more eventful. This would definitely be a great activity for kids! The walk is not very long, and there is a small gift shop inside. Parking is extremely minimal, so if you anticipate it being a busy day, I would call ahead. Fun experience overall! Just wish I saw...

We visited here in July and even in a drizzling rain we were able to use the center’s umbrellas and walk the boardwalk. The boardwalk leaves from the visitor center which has a full scale gift shop with lots of books and other items. Restrooms are available but there is no food/drink to purchase. The board walk is wonderful because anyone in that is mobility challenged can access the trail and experience this wonderful sanctuary. The boardwalk is a loop and had a few benches to sit and take a rest. Tons of birds and information about the flora and fauna is available along the walk. Getting to this sanctuary was interesting, it is WAY off of the beaten path! Stay committed to the trek and enjoy a wonderful walk.
