Ample parking, easy to navigate trails, lots of resting spots and beautiful surroundings. Also a great spot to look for Stafford Rocks.
Two routes to explore, the one to the right takes you into the area where sandstone was mined for many of the areas buildings and monuments, to include the iconic ones in DC. Great interpretive signs explain the park and it's ancient history.

Read moreEvery season offers a distinct experience here. I live near here and go to Government Island around once a week. Great place for kids as there is great walking concrete for strollers, and excellent bark trail for trail running. I have trail run here, backpacked my daughter, and run with her in the stroller on the off road loop, and ots a great place for a of the above.
However. Beware of snakes in the summer, since the loop turns into an Indiano Jones snake pit and you'll have to vault over snakes for 20 minutes to get back onto the concrete trail. Fortunately venomous snakes here...
Read morePeaceful place for a leisurely walk. Free and open to the public, Government Island offers nice wide trails, about half of it accessible to those with walking disabilities. The first third is paved, second third is wooden boardwalk and last third is mulched path through wooded terrain. The last third has inclines, but otherwise flat path. Parking is free.
