Beautiful park for exploring, running, walking or just hanging out. Ample parking, easy to navigate trails, lots of resting spots and beautiful surroundings. Also a great spot to look for Stafford Rocks. Two routes to explore, the one to the right takes you into the area where sandstone was mined for many of the areas buildings and monuments, to include the iconic ones in DC. Great interpretive signs explain the park and it's ancient history. A great spot for bird watching, learning about history, photography and more. Some photos I took here are feature snaps of the area. A single porta-potty is at the entrance by the parking area.

It's just so pretty!! Sometimes it's very busy, but sometimes you'll end up completely alone. There's no public playground that I've seen, but the trail is beautiful, especially the unpaved areas. Also, it's pretty stroller friendly too, for a hiking trail, if you've got a pretty nice one anyways. I wouldn't take an umbrella stroller though, unless you keep to the paved part.

Open later mid March to 8 pm. It's a park in every season. Government Island is a local gem. Great place for literally anyone. Quick enough trail for children to stay engaged, lots of spots to take a breather and take in the scenery. Great local history with stunning views that have been preserved. Highly recommend.

Every season offers a distinct experience here. I live near here and go to Government Island around once a week. Great place for kids as there is great walking concrete for strollers, and excellent bark trail for trail running. I have trail run here, backpacked my daughter, and run with her in the stroller on the off road loop, and ots a great place for a of the above.

However. Beware of snakes in the summer, since the loop turns into an Indiano Jones snake pit and you'll have to vault over snakes for 20 minutes to get back onto the concrete trail. Fortunately venomous snakes here...

Peaceful place for a leisurely walk. Free and open to the public, Government Island offers nice wide trails, about half of it accessible to those with walking disabilities. The first third is paved, second third is wooden boardwalk and last third is mulched path through wooded terrain. The last third has inclines, but otherwise flat path. Parking is free. Bathroom facilities consist of one portable potty in parking lot. Make sure to Google Government Park entrance to get the most...
