Absolutely beautiful! My kids (all varying ages) enjoyed walking the trails, having quiet reflective moments at the edge of the water, and especially watching the kites during the festival. We have visited for special events as well as “just because” outings. The trails were easy enough for strollers and dogs (though we no longer use the stroller), the views and the kite flying were phenomenal. I have never successfully flown a kite before, but even my four year old was able to get in on the action- so if you ever needed a sure thing, this is the place for kites and looking cool in front of the kids. Keep checking the calendar on their website (once the government shutdown ends) because they usually have something fun for everyone..it also offers historical buildings and artifacts that the family can explore, great picnic potential on the large lawn area just outside the small gift...
Read moreI love this place! We rent a slip here for our boat, which has saved our relationship in a way that counseling never would have for all the times he would have had to apologize for the things he might have said while we were backing up the trailer! And there's more! There are two marinas with boat ramp access, boat rentals, and fish cleaning facilities, park visitors can learn about the military past by visiting the park museum, you can rent cabins or regular camp style, there's an arboretum (where you go look at trees and plants), boat ramps, dog park, fish cleaning station, gas dock (which you might think it's expensive, but your not having to get out of the water😉), concession/restaurant with ice cream, playgrounds, and more stuff. Check out the website. Plus you...

There were carts to carry your gear from the car park to the camp site, it had a fire grate and was well shaded. Ticks were a major issue(didn't treat clothes with permethrin). Trails around the fort are fairly short and not that much elevation change so should be do-able for the older generation. Check in was super easy as is for most state parks. It states the marina has gas - this appears to be only for boats so don't get caught out. There is the nearby city of Garrison which is a lovely place and contains all the amenities you would need(particularly recommend the butcher!!) Gas, food, camping goods, souvenirs...
