Wonderful hike, it's amazing how beautiful the view is for such a short climb. I went out solo and made it to the overlook within 25 minutes, according to Strava it's about 1.2 miles each way. Make sure you bring good shoes, perhaps a walking stick, as it's a bit rocky but not too bad. Oh and definitely layer on the bug spray!
The trail is very well maintained and clearly marked, the parking is a little confusing at first but you'll want to park in the lot ACROSS from the entrance to the trail. About 1/3 of the way up you'll see a fork in the trail, to the left says private property and to the right you can see the blue trail blazes, so go right. It's obvious once you know it but when I first came up to it I was a little nervous.
Once you're at the top there are multiple outcroppings with great views, so don't be discouraged if it's crowded. Even past the stone bench there are a few more spots, each a little different from the last. All in all this was one of the best hikes I've...
Read moreFor a quick hike that takes less than an hour, this is a nice one. Went on a weekday as I know it can be crowded. Limited parking on the trailhead. When you heading there, on the gravel road, there is green sign saying entering Hampshire county and leaving Frederick country that is where the parking is, on the left. Nice little bench at the summit for a good resting spot to gaze at the view. I'd say is about 2.5 miles total out and back. Steady incline maybe about 400 feet. Fairly easy, just watch the rocks. Dogs are allowed on trail, just need a leash. I took my dachshund and she...
Read moreA brief hike to Eagle Rock and beautiful views all around. We decided to keep going, however, and realized after about 45 minutes that we were now on the rugged Tuscarora Trail. This was no picnic, and we realized we had to turn back and traverse the same rugged terrain. I recommend going directly up to Eagle, then coming back down. They should put a sign at that trailhead stating "You are now entering the Tuscarora Trail, which goes all the way to Harrisburg, PA. The next opening is in 15 miles at the intersection with VA rte 50. Only serious hikers should enter. " Thanks...
