A must-see, decades old destination for anyone traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway. I have been to Mabry's Mill several times throughout my life, and every time is like the first time! A beautiful little gem tucked away along the path of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mabry's Mill seems to be preserved in a bubble of lost time. Carefully maintained by the Heritage Association, Mabry's Mill offer more than just a picture-esque setting. A quick walk through the property will reveal information about the purpose of the water wheel and grinding house, which was to grind corn and other grains into meal to be sold. Several of the old buildings have been restored and now exist as a sort of museum, letting people experience a small slice of what life was like for those who owned Mabry's Mill 100 years ago. Be sure to stop in the shop where you can pick up local artisan crafts such as windchimes, signs, and delicious things to eat such as locally made fudge and cookies! Several people come from miles around to take wedding or other event photos in front of the extremely recognizable and titular "Mabry's Mill" and mill pond. If you find yourself cruising the Parkway, be sure to stop in and grab your quintessential photo of the pond....
Read moreI have been going to Mabry Mill with my family ever since we moved to Floyd County in 1964. To be honest with you nothing has changed since the very first time I laid eyes on it. Maybe a little signage an extra Buckboard wagon or two maybe a plow some gravel, some asphalt. What's different is the scenery. No matter what time of the year it's always wonderful. Fall is the best spring is okay. Winter with snow on the ground or snow falling is just as exciting. There's plenty of shade to take care of the summer and the views... oh wow there's nothing like it. It's been a tradition that we go there all the time in the fall and at Easter. There were five of us kids then there are nine nieces and nephews for husbands one wife one life partner two or three girlfriends and 15 great nieces and nephews. Everybody's been there and everybody continues to go. We find a place to picnic. Play softball. Hunt Easter Eggs. Hike and it's always fun. There are bathrooms a small restaurant campgrounds during season picnic shelters picnic tables are also available all up and down the parkway get on up there and enjoy it as much as we have for the...
Read moreWe visited early in October. The leaves here, in Virginia, are just beginning to turn their beautiful fall colors. Visiting the Blue Ridge Parkway at the end of the tourist season has been a delight. There are very few cars on the Parkway. We can always find a parking spot at the pullouts. And the other visitors are very relaxed as well. Magnet Mil is a peaceful place to visit. We arrived a little after 4:00 p.m. in the late afternoon. At this time of year, there are no demonstrations to enjoy, nor park rangers to visit with. But there is a walking path around the displays that can easily answer many questions about life in the 1800's. We would have liked go inside a couple of the buildings, such as the cabins and smith's shop, but we could see things enough through the windows. The Mill itself is the highlight of the visit. Be sure to read all the plaques, and visitor information in the BRP book. And the 'University of Google' can always answer more questions. Mabry Mill is located at milepost 176 along the Parkway...
