Red Rock Canyon Overlook: A Hidden Gem on Route 159

Red Rock Canyon Overlook is located off Nevada State Route 159, which starts on the east side of Las Vegas and winds its way across the town, where it is called Charleston Blvd., to Red Rock Canyon. It then hooks down south towards Blue Diamond before ending at the intersection of Route 160. The overlook boasts a fairly large parking space and restrooms for both men and women. However, the true star of the show is the breathtaking view of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Depending on the time of day or different times of year, the view of the mountains and the land in between transforms. The play of shadows can be truly captivating, especially if you have a camera with a good lens to capture the moment. I've stopped there on a cold morning, bundled up with a steaming cup of coffee, and on a warm evening, wearing a t-shirt and holding a cold drink (nonalcoholic, of course!). Both visits were equally enjoyable. My timing was perfect on several occasions - right after a rain storm. The usually dry creek below the parking lot was filled with rushing water, creating a sight to behold!

If driving on Route 159, consider stopping here for a few minutes. You...

Red Rock Canyon is a breathtaking natural wonder that left me in awe of its majestic beauty. The vibrant hues of the towering sandstone formations and the rugged desert landscape create a mesmerizing contrast. The scenic drive is a visual feast, offering countless photo opportunities around every turn.

Hiking the trails provided a closer encounter with the unique flora and fauna of the Mojave Desert. The panoramic views from vantage points like Calico Tanks and High Point Overlook are simply awe-inspiring. The sense of tranquility and connection to nature is unparalleled, making Red Rock Canyon an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas.

The visitor center offers insightful information about the geological wonders and the ecosystem, enhancing the overall experience. Whether you're an avid hiker, a nature enthusiast, or just seeking a serene escape, Red Rock Canyon is a must-visit destination that showcases the raw beauty of the...

Not what most people would think to do while in Las Vegas but if you want to spend an afternoon sightseeing, this is the place to go. You scenic route is 13 miles and $15 for a day pass. It appears that some dates require a reservation. I was there in June and that wasn't required. You can drive straight through or stop at designated parking areas and take a hike. The visitors center has maps with a guide to the level of difficulty for each trail printed on the back of the map. Definitely stop at the visitor center. Tell a volunteer what you are interested in and they can give you the best guidance. Sightseeing, rock climbing, easy hike or something more challenging. Landscape or wildlife photography. A volunteer gave a recommendation to hike a house trail near the center but off the route and I found an amazing area with cactus I hadn't seen. Rent a car and go. Spend a day in the sun. Take sunscreen and alot of water. Best hike for me was...
