This is one of a few large natural lakes in California. Unfortunately it will probably be completely dried out within a hundred years, as it is quickly evaporating due to the climate in this area. High in alkalinity it's home to many species of fish including the Eagle Trout which is unique to the lake, hence the name. The southern part of the lake is where the best fishing is. That part of the lake averages about 40 feet in depth whereas the northern part averages a depth of 10 feet. The small resort town of Spaulding lies on the northwest shoreline of the lake. There's also a small airport in the area. The lake is in a pretty area of...

If you want to swim and hang at the beach this is not the Lake for you which I why I game it a 4. Fishing I think would be great as they have boat ramps. We camped at Merrill campground and it was great. Lots of trees, nice level and huge sites. We had a 31’ RV and two tents in our site and not at all crowded. Quiet and camp hosts were so nice and helpful. The drive in is a bit windy but we camped at Mt. Diablo, Limekiln (Drive the Pacific highway) and Yosemite - the drive to Eagle lake was a walk...

The trail to this loop starts right next to emerald bay. You have to hike about 1 mile from start of eagle lake trail to get to this lake. Quite a strenuous hike but worth it. Wear good hiking shoes, lots of slippery rocks and loose gravel on the trail. Carry enough water and food. You can hike along the entire rim of the lake. Not too much foot traffic alonh the trail. Lot of good vista points...

Great lake to visit. I have been coming here since the late 80s and it is always a pleasure. The campgrounds are well kept and they have plenty of space. The trip from Susanville to here isn't too bad. The camp hosts are always helpful. It is always a pleasure to visit this place as it seems to never be over crowded. I'll definitely be coming for years to come
