Nestled in the foothills of the Granite Chief Wilderness peaks just north of Lake Tahoe, the Five Lakes promise dramatic yet tranquil surroundings, a place to relax, fish or swim. The hike starts out at the junction of Alpine Meadows Rd and Deer Park Rd, rises gently towards the Five Lakes plateau and up the side of KT22 peak through expanses of exposed granite and jagged volcanic rock. The two mile trail maintains little more than a slight incline, but still gains nine hundred feet of elevation before reaching the lakes. On the warmest Tahoe days this trail lacks a great deal of shade, but the lakes themselves provide plenty of cover from the sun and opportunities to cool off in the waters.

Beautiful hiking - even with a lot of snow! Late Nov & snow; snow shoes recommended, but some hiking boots & good legs will get you through the thick snow & some soft spots as mini waterfalls flow down the mountain. Beautiful & peaceful - we had the entire trail to ourselves, save one other couple. Recommend for a short -ish (you decide the distance, we did 4 miles RT) hike, beautiful mountain views, and a little bit of elevation 🙌🏼

Nice hike, 1.5 hrs to get to main lake. Hiked in peak heat, trail has no shade with exception of few spots and once you get to the end. Awesome bonus on the way up there will be 2 small creeks with interval of 30 minutes of slow pace hike, that are flowing down that can help you cool off. Water in lakes is cold, snow is still here, not fully melted its july 17th, 23.

Gorgeous hike! One of the best hikes I've ever done! The 2.5 trek to the lakes is uphill and required a number of breaks for water (and to catch my breath). But those breaks also served as time to take in the absolutely stunning landscape! From wildflowers to rock scapes, mountains to valleys, I was constantly in awe. The lake area is more flat but still rocky so wear good shoes. The lakes were so peaceful and beautiful too. The hike back down was considerably easier (and faster) but that's because it was downhill. Give yourself plenty of time and pack loads of water and a snack for this...
