Well, we have ridden this road/system for a couple months now. We go 2-3 times a week to ride bikes here. So this is just my wife and my opinion.
There are 3 areas to access the road. There is the breezewood side,, the other end outside of hustontown, and the 3rd is around the middle of the road. We perfer the middle or hustontown side. The breezewood side has more graffiti and trash from being the most popular access being right off of 30 just outside of breezewood.
The road is rideable but is in need of some help. There are sections where the asphalt is very rough and pretty much just a gravel road. There is 2 sides but nature has reclaimed areas and grown over parts of the road.
The tunnels are full of graffiti and phallic images. There is also a lot of trash with empty water bottles, beer cans/bottles, spray paint cans, cigarette butts/vape cartridges, and dirty diapers. I don't understand how people can't pick up after themselves.
The positive points is that once you get passed the breezewood end and pass Ray's tunnel, the people seem to get less and less so you can enjoy nature more. We've seen eagles, deer, foxes, turtles, and turkey along the road. We've been out there for over an hour before seeing another person during the week. The weekend however, is always pretty busy. It is an interesting place and I hope that the state or counties will do something to save it and stop the deteriation of...
Read moreI took my four younger children on a bike ride and hiking adventure here- important points to know with younger kids- have headlamps or flashlights and water because they will want to stop! By the simple nature of the trail being on asphalt it is a relatively easy ride, and there is a lot of graffiti to unfortunately keep their (and your!) attention - arriving at the rather apocalyptic looking tunnel entrance, it’s a fun adventure but my youngest less than excited about the adventure- I thought he’d be good to go with the others - relative ease, you can turn around don’t have to a lot of it, I liked that when we went we literally did not run into a soul- we like our adventures to be often times “our own”- we usually keep snacks (and a small amount of emergency tp and a ziploc bag, at least the last time we were there no facilities)- first aid kit with bandaids always a good idea- hiking can be done easily, no treacherous terrain, like with any adventure with kids snacks are important- a few gas stations in the...
Read moreBeautiful foliage this autumn! The old turnpike is lined with quite the variety of trees, so colors are exquisite at peak. The northern terminus parking lot is about 1 mile from the 1.3 mile long Sideling Hill Tunnel. Would definitely recommend a light source to go through the tunnel. 99% of the graffiti is definitely lacking artistic skill and or any form of imagination. Considering how much concrete there is at the location, I was looking forward to seeing some beautiful artwork, however very little existed. We were planning on biking the 8.2 miles of the abandoned turnpike, but 1 mile in my tire blew (not due to anything on the road), so we walked 4 miles and turned around. That being said, we didnt reach the second tunnel, Ray's Hill Tunnel, that is estimated to be about 3.5 miles after the first tunnel. There was several people there the Saturday that we ventured out; definitely a popular spot on the gorgeous fall weekend that we chose. Would love to come back and bike the...
