This section for US 550 is in New Mexico and it is NOT part of the 'Million Dollar Highway" in Colorado. The first New Mexican city is Cedar Hill, as the highway traces across NW New Mexico through other small towns. to Cuba NM, west of the Santa Fe National Forest. Almost directly south of Los Alamos as the crow flies, it joins with I-25, just outside of Bernalillo, NM. It functions mostly as a higher speed truck route to bypass the National Forest and the slower roads with mountain curves. At Cuba, there is a junction with Hwy. 126 which goes into the Valles Caldero National Preservation area. Here you can drive along the south rim of an ancient volcano rim and look out over lush prairies, that have found their ways into many a western movie set. Or if you pick Hwy. 4 in the area, you can drive along the beautiful San Juan River and though the spa country of Jemez and into...

As the name suggests. It's indeed a highway with a million dollar views. There are so many scenic points with waterfalls on the way. It starts with 'Switzerland of America' lookout point and it indeed felt like we were in Switzerland (even tho we haven't been there before but based on whatever we have seen in movies)

It is a motor cycle friendly highway. There were quite a few with us. Takes about an hr depending on how much time you take at each spot. Roads do get little narrowed, but if you are a good driver then you should be good. Make sure you have enough gas filled in before you start. There is a gas station at the end of this highway (in Silverton) and a general store for grocery...

Several friends have always mentioned that this is a really scenic drive and so our expectations were pretty high and this section of highway did NOT disappoint! WOW, no words can describe some of the scenery and colors that we saw. We went in early July so the temperatures in Ouray were warmer but it definitely dropped the higher we went. We will be doing this drive again when we have more time. So worth the time, gas and effort! We were also cautioned about hauling our 27' travel trailer due to some narrow areas with no guard railing but after driving it with just our SUV, we think it's ok to haul our trailer...

The most beautiful road weve ever had the privilege to drive on. Some parts are without guardrails, and definitely recommend 4wd if driving in the winter. We went in november and stopped at ironton ghost town, then to Silverton. The views are magnificent and left us gobsmacked! This was the nail in the coffin for us to move to the mountains from the east coast. The beauty of this place is unmatched. We found that we connected to the mountains and realized how special this place is and how lucky we are to be here to witness it. It was a spiritual experience!

A 25 mile stretch going from Colorado to New Mexico. One of the most beautiful sceneries on open road in the United States. They are a lot of twists and turns. You’re going up the mountain and down the mountain. Some spots there are no godrails. So if you have an RV, big bus, or a truck coming on the opposite way. It could be a little scary. A few different rumors of how it got its name. They said it cost a lot of money to make the highway, the amount of gold that’s in the areas around this highway and some people just say the breath taking views you must see.
