Nestled in the mountains near Telluride, Colorado, Trout Lake offers a serene getaway where nature’s beauty is on full display. This tranquil alpine lake, surrounded by majestic mountain peaks and lush forests, provides a stunning backdrop for an array of outdoor activities.
The lake’s clear, calm waters make it an excellent spot for kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding. It’s also a dream location for fishing enthusiasts, living up to its name with abundant trout populations. The shores of Trout Lake offer a tranquil space for picnics, meditation, or a peaceful afternoon spent reading.
Hiking trails around the lake offer varying levels of difficulty, with plenty of scenic views and wildlife-spotting opportunities. The fall colors in this area are particularly breathtaking, making autumn visits a treat for the senses. I highly recommend checking out the Hope Lake Trail which is a 5- 10 minute drive depending where you are on the lake. The hike is moderately difficult and takes anywhere between 3-6 hours to complete.
Access to Trout Lake is relatively easy, but amenities are limited, which might be an issue for those seeking more developed recreation facilities. Therefore, come prepared with all the supplies you might need for your day out.

Read moreMy absolute favorite spot in all of Colorado! The lake itself is wonderful for fishing, boating and paddle boarding.
The sorrounding hiking trail, specifically the Hope Lake trail is one of the most beautiful hikes in the world leading up to the ice lake.
Even in the Summer on its busiest days, it's still a very manageable crowd compared to Telluride.
If you're coming here any time between roughly late November - early May, I highly suggest you bring a 4x4 vehicle as it's prone to heavy snowfall during these times.
If you follow the road in all the way around the lake, it eventually goes into the Alpine forest. It's a beautiful, slow and bumpy drive through a double track. Eventually leading you back to the summit of Lizard Head Pass and meeting up with Hwy 145.
If you're visiting the 4 corners, or just Colorado in general, do not skip coming here! The views are beyond beautiful! Awe inspiring may be a better phrase for the description...

We got our limit and had to throw some back for being too small. Lots of people were paddle boarding and kayaking. We will definitely be going back there when we’re...
