We went to the Storyteller's Museum and Hideaway Farm on a Saturday afternoon in July. My husband is a huge Johnny Cash fan; consequently, he has wanted to visit for some time now, but the two hour drive takes effort, especially when you have a full schedule like we do. When we got to the museum, I was surprised at the modest size of it, and I wondered if it would be a value for the money we would spend for admission for three adults and a teen.
When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Sally, one of the owners, and we were given the opportunity to browse through exhibits that included everything from impressive mixed-media art, to artifacts from Johnny Cash's life, like the collection of hotel keys he kept when he was on tour. There were letters that Johnny Cash wrote to his first wife, Vivian, before they were married, and his "One Piece at a Time" car was also on display. There was a modern stage and a large television, on which we watched a few short films, one which included home movie footage that has never been seen by the public before now. Then Mark Alan Cash, Johnny's nephew, came on stage to tell stories about his uncle and to sing songs. He took requests from the audience, and he interacted with everyone who was there; he was a lot of fun. Rachel Dawson also performed a couple of songs (what a voice!). After the program was over, Mark Alan and Rachel spent more than an hour talking to us and sharing stories about the museum and the farm. They also gave us a bag of tee shirts. It was wonderful.
Then we went to the Hideaway Farm where we were treated to a tour by the owners, Brian and Sally Oxley. We were impressed by the restoration efforts in the pre-Civil War era parts of the farmhouse, and it was fun to see the bedroom, kitchen, living room, and study that the legend and his wife once shared. Our sons were allowed to try on one of Johnny's long, black coats, and we saw many of the personal items that were owned by the Cash family. We had interesting conversations with the owners as we toured the farm, which included the barn and event venue. It was a meaningful way to spend a day, and it was more than worth the time it took to drive there and the admission price we paid to see everything. Most museums try to channel their guests through a chute at the end of the exhibit, but here, we were invited to stay, to share stories with people who knew Cash, and to listen to the birds from the front porch swing. This place still moves with the breath and heartbeat of the legend who lived here, and when you are there, it feels as if he is just in the next room, waiting...
Read moreThis place is a must see! The people at the museum are wonderful! The couple at Johnny Cash’s Hideaway Farm are so kind hearted and full of stories and they’re all just great people with so many stories to tell and informative about everything! I’ve been in Tennessee almost a year now and these two places by far are the best we have visited! Thank you to all of you for an amazing experience. We will definitely be going back here! Highly recommend this to any music fan!!!
UPDATE to this... fell in love with this place while we were there... recently got engaged and wanted nothing more than to have our wedding and reception at the farm. Emailed, called and reached out through messenger on Facebook to contact them to enquire about having our wedding here... through multiple attempts from all aspects of contact besides going in person... no response. I called the gift shop and the lady told me to reach him (the son of the owner) via their web page, that there was an application to fill out. I filled one out and my fiancé filled one out...no response! Very disappointing... My fiancé and I tried every avenue to reach them and got absolutely no response whatsoever. We attempted contact for a month and got nothing. Sad that their son took over and lacked the compassion and friendliness the original people had.
Update #2… went back just to take a friend who was visiting that loves Johnny Cash and they have done so much to the place. Still sweet people and very genuine. Did ask about the venue as a wedding and they said due to Covid-19 they didn’t have the weddings there they intended. So I would recommend visiting for the Johnny Cash and the Elvis nostalgia…and Johnny’s nephew and his wife are really sweet...

My husband and I brought our 17 yr old daughter and 20 yr old son to the Storyteller’s Farm (our son is a MASSIVE Johnny Cash fan). In short, we came away completely impressed by the property, the memorabilia, and the stories! It truly feels like you’re stepping into grandma and grandpa’s house - authentic, unpretentious, super cozy, but oozing with the spirit of Johnny, June, and their families! It actually feels like you’re just waiting for them to show up from being out of town - it’s nearly indescribable!
The owners of the property were out of town, but their friends, Patsy and Rodney, welcomed us in their stead and were incredibly hospitable! I’m telling you, it felt like we were visiting old friends - they were so warm, welcoming, and kind! We were given a generous tour with ample time in the home, the garage, and on the property!
My favorite experience was our time with Mark (Mark Alan Cash is Johnny’s nephew). He spoiled us with family stories, personal reflections, and a private concert that not only honored his uncle, but also showcased his own music (my personal request)! Our family was incredibly touched by his transparency, sincere love of family, and approachable demeanor. I can’t say enough good things about him, but I highly recommend buying his CD/t-shirt and paying for ticket if he’s ever singin’ in your town!
I wish more people knew about this little slice of heaven Johnny called, “the center of my universe!” It is a gorgeous piece of property with magical landscapes that could mesmerize the most cynical person. No matter how you feel about country music or Johnny Cash, you’ll walk away from this experience humbled and grateful -...
