I will comment on Lilly Bluff Overlook first, that was amazing, it was a short easy walk, lots of seats at the overlook, well marked, plenty of parking, has restrooms, no water fountain so carry water. The Point was extreme in some places, the trail was poorly marked sometimes too since there are lots of side trails that may or may not be ones you want to take, but the rock outcrops were amazing and the trail was a great adventure if you have the time for a few wrong turns. The one thing that would really help is road signs. If you are not familiar with the area, then a few signs from main roads would really help. The same would help for leaving as well, I planned to take a different route out but then my phone died after all the use for pictures and therefore I lost my maps. If there were basic signs for city directions it would help. Carry lunch with you since not many restaurants in this area. Bring a phone charger. Make sure you have a better trail map than the one posted at the trailhead so that you know where you are going if you have a certain...
Read moreObed is the only National Wild and Scenic River in Tennessee. This area has become well known for rock climbing, bouldering, kayaking and hiking, but one can also enjoy more relaxing activities like bird watching, fishing and camping.
My first visit was just me and my older dogs so we only hiked to the overlook and down the Bridge Trail to the Obed river and back up.
The Overlook Trail is only 0.3-mile one way and Bridge Trail is another 0.5 mile one way.
From the same trailhead and parking area, you also have the short and easy Boulder Field Trail or the 3.8 mile (RT) Point Trail to explore.
Parking was a challenge on a cold and nasty late January day in which it sleeted then snowed on our way back home, so I can imagine a much greater challenge finding a spot during warmer seasons.
Keep in mind, these are only the Lilly Bluff Overlook trails. You also have the Rock Creek Campground with Alley Ford and Nemo Bridge Trail to Devil's Breakfast Table (CT) for real hikers.
Most importantly, follow Leave No Trace guidelines or I...
Read moreFrom this trailhead it's 0.3 miles to the overlook which is spectacular, especially with morning or evening light. You'll be looking out over Clear Creek and across the gorge at sheer sandstone bluffs. The plant life up there is pretty cool as well, with lichens and fungi you might not often see, and lots of oaks and holly and hemlocks. The Trail to the Point is close to the overlook, and is 3.8 miles round trip. It drops down to cross a creek and then another creek before going out on the spine of rock between the Obed River and Clear Creek. There are many spectacular viewpoints along the final segment of this trail to the Point. Highly recommended short hikes. For those who want just a little more exercise you can park down at Lilly Bridge and hike up to the overlook, then out...
