This is a quarter mile dirt race track. Like any dirt track, it is loud and very dusty. But if you enjoy this kind of entertainment, you need to pay this place a visit. The facility itself is typical of these tracks, worn wooden grandstands, dirt parking lot, concession stand full of health food like hot dogs, nachos and sausage wraps. They do not sell beer, but do allow you to bring coolers in for $10. Here's the 5 star part- the track officials run one of the tightest programs I've ever seen. As the cars from the previous race are exiting the track, the next race is already lining up on the backstretch. Yellow flags are used sparingly. The rules and enforcement of those rules are reasonable and geared towards providing good racing. There were 6 classes of cars, and between the heat races and feature races we got to watch over 20 races. Most of them were extremely competitive with multiple lead changes and lots of action, which again speaks to how the track rules are set up and implemented. Very little of your evening will be spent waiting for something to happen, the action is as close to constant as possible. If you enjoy watching dirt track racing or really any form of motor sports, you won't regret spending an evening at Cotton...
Read moreEntertaining for sure! We went to the World of Outlaws and took our RV. Although $100 for two nights is high when you consider it was dry camping (no hook ups - generator required), it sure was convenient to have just a short walk back to the RV to call it at night! The bathrooms were clean (considering the venue) and the food decent. I would have given 5 stars but the website is really not that good! They say camping is free but then they were selling weekend camping passes for $100. Then I wasnt sure if I had to purchase the $5 parking fee and did not have an option to purchase passes to the race. Later when we arrived the lady at the gate told us we had to go to a different site to purchase tickets? I totally understand it was a big event but the contradictions on the website were confusing and when you call the track for information you are told to leave a message or send a text. I must say, I was very surprised they texted me right back. We arrived at 7:30 Friday night and nobody was there to tell us where to go despite having explicitly asked if there would be if we arrived between 7 and 8 PM. End of the day we figured it out. I think they need to improve...
Read moreI drove the 45 minutes from my home near UT this past weekend to watch the races at Cotton Bowl Speedway for my first time.
Wow! What an experience! Dirt track racing is such a visceral spectator sport. You're up close enough that you can feel the rumble of the cars as they careen past your grandstand. Along with that, you will hear, smell, and actually taste the racing that's going on right in front of you.
Twelve bucks admission and three bucks per can of ice cold beer. That is a cheap deal for all the fun you're going to have on a Saturday night.
I feel like I should compliment the staff and management of this race track. They keep good order among the classes and drivers. Disabled cars are dragged right off the track in short order and the racing resumes without unreasonable delays. I would like if the announcer would provide a bit more commentary during the races about who is in lead, who the winner is, and what rule is being applied to a given car. The restarts were a little bizarre until another spectator told me the lead car chooses when to resume.
I'll be back for as many races as possible...
