Frijole Ranch Museum – Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Frijole Ranch is a hidden gem in Guadalupe Mountains National Park that's easy to miss if you're not paying attention—but it's well worth the stop. The turnoff is on the right-hand side just before reaching the Pine Springs Visitor Center, also on the right. I arrived early on a weekday morning and had the entire place to myself. It was so peaceful—just me and the sounds of nature. A beautiful, quiet way to start the day.

The museum itself is small and simple, but it has an old-time charm. It gives a glimpse into what ranch life might have been like in this remote part of Texas. While it's not a flashy or interactive museum, it's neat, historically rich, and fits the rugged surroundings. If you love history or just enjoy wandering through old places, you'll appreciate it.

There’s also a trailhead that starts from the ranch—possibly leading to the Smith Spring trail, although I didn’t hike it this time. The scenery around the property is beautiful, and the walk around the ranch itself is lovely and calming. You get fantastic views of the surrounding desert and mountain landscape.

Parking is easy with plenty of space. Overall, Frijole Ranch is a peaceful stop with historical value and gorgeous surroundings. It’s perfect if you're looking for a quiet place to walk, reflect, or just take in the views before or after exploring the more popular parts...

Theresa a park ranger arrived just as we were trying to determine which trail to take and even through she was there to show other regional rangers around, she stopped and spent a very good emount of time with us! She also opened the museum so we all could look and recommend the perfect trailers and spots to rest and take it all in. The passion she has for the area and its guests was palpable and so very greatly appreciated. The National Park and visitors are all so very lucky to have her. Thank you for rubbing on the...

Great pit stop on the way to Guadalupe mountain. Small easy trail to track, amazing vistas, a lake in the middle of a desert. The homestead was beautiful piece of history to see. When we got there it was closed locked up but we were able to walk around and enjoy the shade of the trees and the little spring that ran through the grounds. And we enjoyed feeling like kids and peaking through the windows inside. Overall very well worth a stop especially if you want to...

This former homestead is now a small museum on the history of the area. It is not setup as a house but rather has some exhibits in each of the rooms on the history of the land. We were looking for something to do after a long hike and this was a nice stop, but if you are short on time it can be skipped. There are pit toilets in the parking area. There is also a trailhead for the Smith Spring Trail which looks really nice but we did not have the time for it.

Just up the road from Pine Springs visitor center is Frijole Ranch. The ranch itself is a museum, but this is also the location of a really good loop trail to Smith Springs. It’s a nice trail and has some amazing views, but there are a couple of difficult bits. Its well worth doing. Its well worth doing. The ranch itself is also worth looking round. Its clever how they used to manage the water.

Easy walk from the parking lot. It was amazing to see how they turned the location of a natural spring into a homestead in this desert area. The only bummer was the house was locked up. We were able to look through the windows a bit. We also did the Manzanita Spring hike that was easy on a paved walkway. We have the annual parks pass, so we don't pay a daily fee.
