AMAZING IDEA!!! On 8/24/19 Donna was our guide and we purchased the two hour Jeep tour. She gave great background information and stories and made the Canyon come alive. The vehicles are old military Humvees and I was amazed they would actually climb and descend some of the terrain. They came quite prepared with bottle water and ice packs, a step ladder to get in and out of the jeep and were very solicitous in our comfort. The ranch had a huge array of geological treasures and the owners were proud to show off their best specimens. They stopped often so we could take pictures and were quite accommodating.
My husband and I were there after having been married the previous day and he fell ill halfway thru the trip with what we thought might be a heart attack (let me say that this trip was in no way the cause of it, he had not told me he was not feeling well and didn't want to ruin the trip, this is a known issue of his and sometimes it calms down on its own). Thankfully, it was electrical issue with his heart and not an actual damaging heart attack and he is doing great!
With that said, Donna and the team were amazing in their response. Donna remained cool and calm and concerned and radioed the base of of the incoming situation. It was an arduous task of keeping a 6'3" 230 lb Irish Sasquatch upright and in the vehicle on the way back, but we were able to đ We thought he may have become overheated and the team met us with cooling cloths etc. When the pain was not alleviating, they called 911 and assisted us in getting him out of the jeep and on our way in the ambulance.
I am looking forward to returning and doing this trip again. I warn you, it is a physical trip. You must be able to keep ahold of the rail and keep yourself from falling, so you have to have the stamina and strength for it. But it is soooo worth it. I plan on taking others with me in the future and making this an excursion when friends come to town.
Thank you so much guys for a memorable "honeymoon" and for your thoughtfulness and prayers. I will add pictures once I...
Read moreWe had the BEST experience with Elkins Ranch! We HIGHLY recommend the jeep tour. Me, my husband, and our 6 year old son did the 3 hour tour. It was worth every single penny to get a hands on experience of the canyon from the top of the canyon to the bottom. The day of our trip we had extreme fog. The staff graciously waited 1.5 hours after our scheduled tour, until the fog lifted, so that we could still go on the tour. We had a chance to meet the owners who were so hospitable and kind. Kendra was our tour guide. She was SO kind, caring, absolutely AMAZING, and extremely knowledgeable about the history of the canyon. She made the trip fun, exciting, and very memorable. The ride is very physical meaning you literally have to hold on to the sides of the jeep at times, because the trail is bumpy, there are steep hills to go down and drive up, and at times a little unsteady. They have seatbelts in the jeep for your comfort and protection and padded mats to sit on. We also had the chance to feed the cattle that they have on the ranch. Due to having to wait 1.5 hours, we had an opportunity to walk around the ranch and explore, and my son also got to feed the horses and the donkey that they have on site. The canyon is absolutely breathtaking. there are stops along the way to get out of the jeep, walk around, take pictures, etc. I can't say enough how wonderful this tour was, and how kind EVERYONE at Elkins Ranch is. If we travel back to Amarillo we will definitely stop in to say Hi. These people treat you like you are their own family, and truly provided the most memorable experience to us in Amarillo. Go check them out and prepare to have the experience of...
Read moreThe West family ages 77 to 38 went on the 3 hr tour today. It is a must see if you are coming to Palo Dura Canyon. The experience of riding in a Hummer all the way down to the bottom of the canyon was the most memorable experience ever. We stopped several times to look at rock formations, and the waterfalls area rock is smooth as sand. We were able to walk to the edge and look over. Breath taking views. Then we had the opportunity to go to the Indian dancing rock. Another amazing photo op especially for the younger people in our group. They jumped the gap with Case's help to get out on this special Indian ceremony rock. You can see up and down the canyon forever. Our guide was Case and he told us the history of the canyon before settlers came this way. His knowledge of history for the canyon was most impressive. We saw geodes, prickle pear cactus, Xmas tree cactus (AND DONT TOUCH IT!), fossils and much more. We saw a baby calf about a week old. Momma cow was laying by the side of the road just watching us go by and 2 calves jumped up and ran off a little bit away from their mom. We continue past several more cows that just turned and looked at us while they continued their chewing of grass. Then we arrived at Prairie Dog City and saw all the holes for the litte Prairie Dogs and lots of chatter as we were driving by their homes which are all inter connected under ground. Lots to see and experience. Make this a FIRST stop on your next visit to Palo Dura Canyon. You will remember this experience and talk about it for years to come. As a bonus, the kids will go home with stories to tell and be able to write school papers for...
