This was my first stop on hitting up the old presidios and forts in this area. You could feel the history walking around the area. The river was flowing so the sound of the river in the back drop while standing by the outer wall - you could just imagine the life and difficulties they faced every day compared to how easy we have it now. Lived in Texas most of my life but never knew of Spanish settlement at what now is Menard. Clean restrooms and interesting information panels make this a pleasant stop. Simply walking around in an area occupied by Spanish colonists at the same time English colonists were arguing with French colonists in the St. Lawrence River area helps with one's understanding of European...

A nice site worth visiting if you appreciate history and happen to be in the area. I visited on a Monday and had the entire place to myself, so I can only assume there probably isn't a lot of local interest. The site runs off donations, but I couldn't leave anything since the donation box was locked. Regardless, a good spot to check out if you are passing...

This was my first stop on hitting up the old presidios and forts in this area. You could feel the history walking around the area. The river was flowing so the sound of the river in the back drop while standing by the outer wall - you could just imagine the life and difficulties they faced every day compared to how easy we have it now.
