The Santa Elena Overlook offers a decent view of the surrounding landscape, but it doesn’t quite compare to the awe-inspiring experience of walking through the Santa Elena Canyon. Once you’ve gone down into the canyon and witnessed its towering walls and the beauty of the Rio Grande up close, the overlook feels much less impressive.

That said, the overlook can still be a nice spot for a quick stop and a few photos, especially if you’re looking for a panoramic view of the area. It’s also a convenient option for those who may not have the time or ability to hike down into the canyon itself.

However, if you have to prioritize, the canyon should absolutely take precedence. It’s an unforgettable experience that captures the true magic of Big Bend National Park. While the overlook is fine for a brief visit, the canyon is where the real...

By far one of the reason why I visit Big Bend National Park in Texas. Rio grande river separating two canyons (Mexico / Texas) which shows on paper how unique this spot is as of today’s history. Went on the week before this was closed due to heavy rain in July 2024, the good news was it was opened and took advantage to hike the whole part of the canyon. Usually people turned around at the lake since they couldn’t find the trail or they didn’t want to get their footwear wet but all I use was alltrails to get beyond that (water wasn’t deep and rough). Was a hour front and back hike and took some time to take pics and video of memories of this spot because this is my favorite hikes and love the formation of the...

This is actually a review of the Santa Elena Canyon overlook from the Mexican side of the border viewing into Texas, USA. It's only accessible by entering Mexico, with the nearest port of entry being Ojinaga. It's not for the faint of heart. There's no guide, and no emergency services. No cell reception until you're at the edge of the cliff, maybe. It will require a road legal motorcycle, quad, or capable 4X4 that you don't mind scratching. No readily accessible fuel after Ojinaga. You'll need very good navigational skills. Simple mechanical problems or injuries could be disastrous for those not prepared. The reward is arguably one of the best views of the Big Bend area you're ever going...
