We have reservation for September 21st and was looking forward to our little get away trip from Houston. About two weeks before our planned trip to Son's Island, we got a call telling us the government wanted to drain the lake and the place MIGHT be closing for good. The caller said it would not affect us because the government have planned to drain the lake sometime after September. They said it was their responsibility to call and inform us (which I commend them for). To be honest, we were a little bum. They told us that they will keep us posted. So a week have passed and we got another call letting us know that our reservation is good and we got the green light; with the exception that there was a water ban restriction put in place. Which means absolutely no water activities beside fishing. Yet, another bummer. The representative told us we can relocate to their "sister" resort for another weekend or we can keep our reservation as is. It was already hard to finally get everyone on board to plan this trip. We did not want to reschedule for another weekend. So we opt to keep our reservation as is. Some of us were still a little bum that we would not be able to get in the water. (As for me, I am terrified of snakes. So that was not an issue with me). As we were driving to Son's Island, we had so many thoughts about what our weekend will be like. We also knew that this might be our last chance to see Son's Island. So we decided to make the most of whatever it is we will be facing and kept a positive attitude. AND I HAVE TO SAY, SON'S ISLAND... YOU DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!!! We were in awww when we got to the gate. We are adults acting like kids with excitement. We beamed with delight and right away, we started snapping pictures. The Island was a little dead because everyone was either relocated or have cancelled their reservation (which, to be honest, we did not mind at all). We unpacked our stuff and roamed the place. IT WAS PARADISE!!! The surrounding was picture perfect. From the huts to the landscape to the tents. In every corner, you can find an Instagram worthy shot. Their huts were equipped with chairs, bar stools, grill, an outlet, water source, and OMG... the hammocks (Paradise). They have places to shower and restroom. YES, not one of those grossly port a potty. They have games (big size tic tac toe and corn hole), they have a volleyball court and several campfire pits for hanging out and making smores. Their tents were well equipped too; with two beds and two fans and outlet to charge your phone. A shout out to DAN (the island manager). HE IS AWESOME!!! Dan was very professional and personable. When we pulled up, he greeted us with a big welcome smile and then went over the Island's rules. He reminded us that there will not be any water activities with the exception of fishing (which he made it clear that there will be a fine). He answered all the questions and concerns that we had. He reassured us that Son's Island will not be closing (at least to his knowledge) and was all ready welcoming us back next year. He often stopped by to ask if we needed anything or check up on us to see if we are doing ok. There were a few scare (snakes) but Dan diligently handle it with quickness. Oh.... Louie (I think that is how you spell his name) was awesome too. He was the night shift staff that made our overnight stay very comfortable. A couple of our crew were scared of snakes and did not want to sleep in the tent that we originally have picked out. He offered us a tent that was closer to where his tent was and most likely not many snakes. So thank you Dan and Louie for an AWESOME experience. I have to say... from the start of this trip, we were so bummed. We really did not know what to expect because of the water ban restriction. BUT OMG... I am so glad we went along with it. We had a blast. Not one moment on the Island did we think about life stressor. We laughed, we ate, we drank and BEST of all, we created memories. We are already talking about planning another trip to Son's Island next year.

Ok, so for those of you that have read my reviews, you know they are very detailed. So to start off, the place is fairly easy to find. It is in the corner of a residential neighborhood. As a part of booking son's island, each member of your party has to have their own waiver form, and as far as I can tell, before you check in, you have to have everybody's form printed and you give it to the gate keeper. It seems like overkill to me, but whatever. When you get there, they will direct you to the guard shack (photo below). So you drive up there and they will allow you to drive your car to your cabana, and unload and then come back and park your car where they designate. Ok so this is a plus. Each day cabana does have about 11 seats not counting the picnic table. They have several Day Cabanas, but you need to be careful about which ones you book. The only ones where the river is actually in motion are A12 - A18. All of the rest that I could see are next to stagnate water which from my perspective is unacceptable. Ok to swim in I guess but stagnate water has mosquitos, a nasty smell, and can be fairly dirty. Fortunately I got A15, so we were good there. When it comes to price, they are seriously over priced for a family of 4. The rental was like 180.00 which lasted from 10:00 AM to 7:30PM that day. You get up to 8 people on that rental, so if you can split the money among several people, then maybe it would be worth it. In addition to that, they will nickel and dime you to death. You can rent kayaks, splash pads, and paddle boards for a price. As far as safety, you need to remember you are at a river, and the bottom is lined with rocks that are varying sizes so make sure you are wearing some sort of foot wear, and you are extremely careful when climbing in. I didnt see anywhere that you could get food and drinks, not even a vending machine, so make sure you bring plenty of supplies. Lastly, the tents are totally not worth it. You only get the tent from 7:30PM to 10:00 AM the next day (if I remember correctly) and if you do not have a day cabana reservation for the next day, you will have to leave the property. They require you to book the tent and the day cabana separately, and unless you book extremely early, it is going to be very difficult to get a tent and a day cabana for the next day, let alone tent, and day cabana for multiple days. In addition to that, the tents are extremely close together, and they are like 195.00 per night. I quickly cancelled my tent reservation when I found out you had to leave the property if you didnt have a day cabana reservation. If I remember correctly, my total was like 534.00 for a tent for 2 nights and 1 day cabana reservation. We decided to keep the day cabana reservation and got a hotel for 3 nights for the same amount of money the 2 tents would have cost. Dont get me wrong, this is a great place for a medium sized family gathering as long as you get the right spot and you share the cost, but just not for any type of overnight stay. I hope you enjoyed this review!

Bought a Groupon so it was like $150 for a day cabana plus the night cabana and overnight camping. I did have to pay close to $40 tax with my credit card when I went to book. I am picky picky and I would 100% come back. We brought our own kayaks and water blanket float thing, otherwise they are $70 EACH for the day. My float blanket was $30 on Amazon and held 5 of us. Drinks are $1. Tiny bags of chips that are normally .25-.50 are $3. Ice $5. Easy fix is to bring your own stuff. They don't sell any real food, so you have to leave if you aren't wanting to grill and didn't plan ahead. No biggie, Mcds and Whataburger are 10 min away. My only issue was the port potties. The sh&t was almost to the top. The sh&t went ABOVE the water and literally is gonna overflow soon. They do have some tiny indoor potties on a trailer though on the other side. I'm a big girl, I fit, but if you're obese obese you won't be able to use them. TINY camper size restrooms. Now we are in the tent. Nice fans, cots aren't too bad. You bring your own sheets, bedding and pillows. 5 of 5 enjoyed Sons Island!

First off, one bad apple should not spoil accolades for those deserving. The staff was great and courteous it was beautiful. We loved it!

UPDATE: *I was contacted by a kind who, listened to my review and took action. He. implemented new training for his managers and and instant training for the individual. He took my word as the customer and reached out to me personally. I am very satisfied with the progressive ability to make on the spot corrections/ training and implement future trainings for his staff. Like I said. 1 bad apple shouldn’t ruin it for the rest. UPDATE

Now.... I got cut on the dock. My fault. I thought nothing of it. A staff member came by saw and brought me to there main station site to get a band aid. The manager on duty was there but never evaluated my wound. He was at another counter. I received Band aid. I didn’t realize how bad my cut was. Went for another bandaid since they had larger sizes then I had brought. I had liquid bandaid and peroxide just not big enough band aids. regrets!!!! I went back and asked the manager who was at the counter. He looked through the ill equipped medic bags on the counter. He said he could find any and handed me a small band aid. I asked to see again because I saw others when the other staff member got me the first one. He looked frustrated with me and another staff member came to see what was up. He found one but the MANAGER said he had some stuff but he wasn’t gonna break his bag open for that. (Meaning my wound). I said what??? He said basically not for that. I’m sitting in the ER GETTING A TETANUS SHOT of course but being told it’s too late for stitching. Smh. He never evaluated me this is my issue. It’s just how he treated me. I had another incident w him where he repetitively gave me “ the hand” and told me he didn’t have time when I requested to personally speak w him because I had gotten ill to explain why I needed out the gate

He told me no one was in charge of him and he would not disclose the owners to me.

Then.... he called someone “in charge” which I doubt was real. I explained everything w no result except he was leaving in 15 minutes so my family and I left the park and stayed away from the space and shelter I had rented so I could get away from him. I was shaking and upset and my children were watching this all happen.

We got back. He stayed longer and proceeded to park his vehicle where me and my daughter were playing corn hole. Walking past us several times after I was given notification he was to have vacate the site.

Not a big deal but our tent light was broke and they gave us little lanterns. Thank you

We left at like 7 am because I knew he would be back and I did not want him around my family and I. So we did not enjoy all of our time we could have spent there out of intimidation.

I read that for “ every bad review there are so many good to out weigh but I ask that this situation be looked into. First questions in the gate I specifically asked if there was security on site and a medic. I was humiliated, defeated and out so much money to be treated sooooo poorly. I’m so embarrassed how he kept giving me the hand in from of my children. 😕

My ER bill will be nice. 2 antibiotics, 1 pain reliever and a tetanus shot....

Get rid of him and you’ve made heaven on earth. 😕

BTW: SMORSE ARE NOT free as posted in website. Staff tried to charge me $3.00 per smore. What? That’s what attracted us. Tent and smores by the fire. so he said we can give you one free.... smh 🤦🏽‍♀️

That was my 4th of july💥😕
