What a beautiful escape from the desert, with free admission and free parking. Its a shame that the staff tried to ruin my experience here by harassing me and my service dog no less than five times during our walk, following me throughout the preserve in their truck, and spying on me as I ate a grapefruit at McCollum pond (I wonder what they thought I was up to? Criminally enjoying nature?). One male staff member began yelling at me before we even got on the trail and blocked me from continuing until he was finished humiliating me, accusing me of lying, even after I offered to show the appropriate paperwork for my working animal, which I am not legally required to show regardless. Finally, trying to avoid them, I took the shortcut return trail to the parking lot, but the male.staff member was there - along with his two non service dogs - and a large lady not in staff uniform who began taking photos of me and my vehicle upon our return to it! She further humiliated me by hollering that I was lying about my service dog and that "emotional support" dogs don't count as service (not that it matters, but my service animal is indeed a service dog, and not an emotional support animal). She continued loudly to berate me as we loaded into my truck, ridiculously asking me for proof that he was a service dog(which is a direct violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act), even though I had offered it upon arrival. She wouldn't leave me alone until I was in tears, showing her my dogs certificate and I.d. card, explaining my disability and my service dogs job, while a bunch of other patrons in the parking lot watched. It was embarrassing to say the least...I just wanted to go for a walk, and now I've got to file a lawsuit to ensure that the next disabled person doesn't get...
Read moreWent in the winter, January 2022. Amazing place. Unexpected experience in nature. There were a lot of big black crows cawing and flying from palm tree top to palm tree top. Their big claws make a creepy sound when they land on a palm frond. Not my favorite type of wildlife.
There is a wooden boardwalk that goes through a swampy area and the palm trees here look Gigantic! It's very Jurassic Park-esq. The coolness of the ravine and water is a nice transition from the desert heat you are surrounded by. It's just a very weird, very cool place. I actually felt like I was falling over all the time. Not sure if that was because we are on an off-shoot of the San Andreas fault, or the pot I smoked?
Only 4 Stars because the parking lot was closed so you have to park on a very scary desert country road where they drive 60 miles an hour and there is no paved shoulder. It's dangerous. Getting out of your car is dangerous, crossing the street is dangerous, pulling out to leave is dangerous, turning your car in the direction you want to travel after pulling out...
Read moreBeautiful views! We have hiked here twice in the last week. First day was Pushawalla. We returned a second day for Moon Country.
TRAIL MARKINGS: We felt Pushawalla was was poorly marked. We even felt we were lost for a bit before finally running into another trail marker. The Moon Country Trail was the complete opposite. It had signs all over the place, including ones that say to not go in a direction that could be mistaken as being a part of the trail.
VIEWS/DIFFICULTY: Pushawalla was a moderate level hike for us. It was much more scenic than Moon Country (an easy level hike). Given the higher elevations with Pushawalla, the trail provided absolutely gorgeous views down into the canyons with palm trees (see pics). The Pushawalla trail width was kind of scary at times, though, due to the trail being very narrow at the top. We just made sure we weren't looking at the scenery at those times! Moon Country was a...
