We recently enjoyed an absolutely wonderful day out at Cunningham Falls State Park. Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Catoctin Mountains, its location could not have been more perfect - offering an idyllic retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
One of the highlights of our visit was undoubtedly the pristine water. It was immaculate and inviting, offering a refreshing respite from the summer heat. We also greatly appreciated the convenience and cleanliness of the changing rooms on the south side of the park. They were spacious and well-kept, adding to the overall comfort of our visit.
The new concession stand pavilion was a welcome surprise. It served a variety of snacks and refreshments, perfect for satisfying mid-day cravings and refueling after an active morning. The staff was friendly and service was prompt, making our experience even more pleasant.
We were especially impressed by the park's water sports offerings. You can rent stand-up paddle boards and kayaks, with all equipment appearing to be in excellent condition. We were unable to rent any equipment during this visit but are eagerly looking forward to doing so on our next trip.
Despite being a popular destination, the park maintained an atmosphere of serenity and tranquility during our visit. Parking was ample, and while there were other visitors around, it was far from being overcrowded. That being said, I do suspect that it might get busier at peak times, so planning your visit accordingly might be a good idea.
Finally, the organization and management of the park deserve a shout-out. Everything was orderly and well-coordinated, which made our visit smooth and hassle-free.
All in all, our time at Cunningham Falls State Park was a delightful experience - a combination of relaxation, fun, and adventure in a serene natural setting. We're already looking forward to our next visit and the opportunity to try out their water sports equipment. If you're looking for a great day out in nature, we wholeheartedly recommend Cunningham...
Read moreReally nice state park. We rented a cabin for 3 days, 2 nights. Unfortunately, it was during the remnants of Hurricane Ida, so it rained a lot. During "Peak Season" (Memorial Day to Labor Day) the cabins are usually all booked up. You have to reserve the cabin a month in advance (if even avaliable).
It's nice. Peaceful and quiet. There is a public bathroom at the center of every "camping" loop. The bathroom has 2 toilets, 2 urinals, and a small shower. It's usually clean, unless the campers themselves don't clean up after themselves. The bathroom has lights, so it's illuminated throughout the night.
The cabins (at least the one we rented) has 1 big bed, and a bunk bed. Adults may have a hard time in the bunk beds. The bunk beds are a bit small, and not enough room to toss and turn during sleep. The cabin does have electricity, and a light inside; and also one on the outside porch. There are about 3 power outlets inside, to plug in a fan or a light. Our cabin also had a window AC unit. That helped to keep the cabin cool.
There is cellphone service out there. Though some areas of the campground do drop the signal (they tell you to NOT rely on your cellphone there). A portable radio will pick up the AM, FM, and weather stations.
There is also a lake that allows swimming and canoeing. The remnants of Ida was passing through, so the lake was closed. I hope to go to the lake on the next trip.
There is a town (Thurmont) about 5 miles away. The town has a Wise grocery store, restaurants, gas stations, etc. You can always grab supplies there if you forgot to bring something.
We are planning to go back sometime soon. I enjoyed Cunningham Falls State Park. It's nice to just chill and relax....
Read moreWe were here for a week. Sunday 9/10/23 to Sunday the 17th. We were in spot 116 at deer springs. The route in was easy to find. The check in was simple and easy. Staff here is exceptional. The grounds and rules were easy to follow. The camp store gentleman was so very friendly to talk to. We chatted with him on the Sunday that we arrived. Bought firewood and ice cream. He would not be open again until the following Friday because of low camping volume. We bought more wood at the check in mid week. We didn't need ice, but it's available. Our spot had only electricity and a picnic table. Water is available at nearby faucets. About four or five different faucets around the circle. We loaded water upon arrival in the camper. Sewer is two stations at check in booth on the way out on far right. There is an exit for others that don't need to dump. Trash for us was at the furthest end of the park road. Recycling and four dumpsters. Thet have bears in those woods, so trash is away from the sites for safety. Our campground hosts were Paula and Jim. Very friendly to chat with and well informed about the history at the campground. They clean the sites after the previous campers leave and do an excellent job. I enjoyed spending a bit of time with them. Bathroom is clean with two showers. The shower has a curtain between the changing area and shower, but there is a solid door that can be locked between the changing area and the rest of the bathroom. I like the privacy. I would definitely come back to this campground. I really didn't want to come home. We had a very stress free relaxing atmosphere here. I...
