Wildlife Reserve-NOT a park! I am a local. I literally live next door.
First of all, understand, this is a wildlife reserve. It's all about the animals and not the people. Plenty of deer and tons of birds. It does have some park like areas, but that is not its main concern. It's a very large area and has a ton of camping spaces. You can literally camp right next to the water. Some areas you can go the weekend without seeing another person. Many, if not most, locals don't know where half of the camping areas are.
What you will not find is showers, running water or flush toilets. Camping is rustic. Some areas more rustic than others.
Give the headquarters just outside Tishomingo a call for some basic advice. They are some really helpful folks.
Great place for an outdoor reunion near the headquarters.
Tons of wildlife, especially birds. Warning, keep your food secure if camping. Possums, raccoon, deer and other critters might pay you a visit at night.
Hunting areas can be reserved.
All kinds of fishing. From shallows kayak fishing up to 50-60 foot houseboat on Lake Texoma.
There are some great fishing charter services in the Kingston area about 30 minutes away. Also some other parks with manicured lawns and full hookups.
Bring plenty of ice and water, sunscreen, hats, fishing gear and bait.
While there, drop by downtown Tishomingo and take a swim at Blue River Crossing. Downtown Tishomingo has really upped it game with good food and a bit of night life.
The Chamber of Commerce in Tishomingo always knows what local events...
Read moreThe place is not well maintained, there is beer bottles trash left behind by people fishing along with lures and hooks falling trees and debris left on the beaches causing sandbars has closed off the boat ramps. You can tell that no one takes the time to Manicure or probably care for the environment. It's left to its own demise an individuals to do go down there fishing and leave behind trash have no regard for the environment or leaving it clean for others to use. It is a shame it is falling in such disrepair abandoned. Not sure exactly what the city and the state pay the workers to do. Because it doesn't look like they do much other than brush hog the tall grass, because they do not pick up any kind of trash and do not make sure that the waterways are clean from debris the boat ramps I would say are not working order at all it has been left to Nature...
Read moreThe Wildlife Refuge is beautiful. There are walking paths, lookouts, and areas made for just sitting and enjoying the nature around you. There are also camping spots available. This time of year (Fall), the water is filled with migrating birds of all kinds. They are amazing to watch. My visit this trip was to attend a wedding. The Pavilion area is well equipped and can accommodate a large group. The setting is perfect for any occasion for most of the year. Of course the Refuge is right outside of the town of Tishomingo. Stop in and...
