Burr Pond State Park is a very beautiful and peaceful park. The pond is the showstopper here, hence the name.
Driving up to the park was enjoyable; there's a big hill with a small waterfall you can see from the street. The parking area was a decent size but I can see it being packed in the summer and on weekends. The park is on 438-acres and the man-made pond is 85-acres. Popular recreational activities in this park are hiking, fishing, swimming, and boating. The pond was created in 1851 to help produce power buy building dams. There are two trails within the park; 2.5-mile blue blazed Walcott Trail which goes around the pond and 2-mile John Muir trail which goes through multiple parks.
The beach is quaint but does the job on a hot day rather than driving an hour or so to the beach. There were so many picnic tables throughout; definitely a nice area for picnics. There is a seasonal boat rental and concession stand. If you want to go boating, there is a boat launch.
We went in the winter for an event, the parking lot was packed so they were offering shuttles. The park was beautiful in the winter with the pond being frozen. There were people ice fishing and playing on the ice. I went recently on a spring weekday, temperature was perfect and the place was quiet. We walked on the trail and it was lovely with the view of the pond. Overall, a great park and will be there as...
Read moreBurr Pond is a quiet gem I only recently discovered during my journeys and adventures in the great state of CT. I recommend if you haven't, that you check in, and enjoy a nice clean state Park where you can swim fish kayak and if you're lucky, catch the ice cream truck after the grill goes cool. The vast, shady picnic areas feature rugged, easy to use and clean grills mounted securely within a few feet of each grouping of one two and three picnic table spots- and the high overlook pavilion could easily host a little wedding it other celebration, just check with the town for protocol on that. The restroom building was perfectly maintained, and there's even what I suspect a natural spring water tattoo just outside the top level parking area a few steps into the easily negotiated paths- a great place to walk with Mama best friend as long as he's 100% good boy! Really though, a great place just minutes away from anywhere in the state. Ok more minutes away if you live in Putnam than Plymouth but it's a small state, and a...
Read moreOk so here's my gripe. While the park is nice, the "inhabitants" weren't. I had to turn away the eyes of my 4 children as 3 vile young women walked around with a Bluetooth speaker playing disgusting mumble rap and twerking, all while wearing bathing suits 5 times too small for a skinny woman, nevermind these big ol gals. They carried on loudly, apparently showing off for the uninterested masses of middle eastern immigrants, Hispanic families bbqing, and whatever poor small children who were unfortunate enough to be looking in their direction at the time. Almost every family there was playing a different Spanish song... All at the same time... All on max volume. I spoke to the park staff... And they were completely uninterested. What I gather is this is the environment they're looking to promote... So if this isn't your scene... Stay away....or you'll end up in a nightmarish plus...
