Years ago, Indian Lake Park was where many local amateur astronomers went to escape the light-dome of Madison's west side (and Middleton car dealers). That may still happen. I don't use it for that purpose any longer. Indian Lake is now exclusively a dog-park to me. The dog-exercise area there is one of my favorite places to take my dog. It's big enough that even if the lot is full and the space is maxed out with people and their pooches, there's still enough space that you never feel crowded. Most days (when I go, which is generally early - before 8 am), there are only two or three other people there. Abundant space to walk and romp (if you're a dog) without having to deal with others. Nearly perfect solitude in a beautiful space. Unlike most other dog parks, the Indian Lake dog exercise area does not have boundary fences around most of the property. If your dog in inclined to roam far away from your ability to control, this may not be your best space. If your dog is a velcro-dog (like my Bear), it...
Read moreAugust 1, 2020 We parked at main entrance. I recommend parking more on the left side of it but if you can get a spot facing the water then don't. To left is the play area, picnic tables and the hike to the chapel overlook. We went straight back and decided to take the blue path. My kids 7 &10 did great on it. Once you can't see the water anymore it gets quite hilly. My fitbit logged 56 stairs. It felt like we were in middle of woods, few muddy spots. Bugs got bit bad but once out in open again it was fine. I have to say paths were very well marked. So many signs or arrows. The blue path was very wide and easy to keep distance from others. The path to the chapel is narrower. Lots butterflies. Did run into a couple with their dog not on a leash. My kids spoke out loud and asked me why this dog wasn't on a leash. I replied loudly it's because these people don't...
Read moreThis is a wonderful nature area for hiking, especially with your dog! All the trails are clearly marked with maps at every intersection. Maps all has "You are Here" pointer to help you find your way. Plenty of benches around the lake side perimeter so great for folks who needs to take it slow. There is an unfenced off-leash pet area about half a mile from the main trail head. It has water access as well as a treeless, flat open field great for zoomies. All in all, this is a very pet friendly, family friendly, beginner friendly and hiking lightweight friendly place to enjoy nature. Oh and depending on what direction the wind blows, there might be a constant smell of...
