Presently tent camping here. This was night five. The campsites are grassy and well-maintained. The restrooms are exceptionally clean, including the showers. Not a bug or speck of mildew in sight. Hot water in the showers after less than half a minute. Handicap accessible shower with wand and seating
Check-in staff leave in the evening, and according to the sign in the window, the expectation is that you find an open site and pay for it in the morning. For tent campers, you may find (as I did) that you have to move your tent if you plan to stay another night, since the spot you selected could be reserved. So make reservations or be prepared for that possibility.
The place is far more populated on the weekends. Monday and Tuesday this week, I saw only 5 or 6 other sites in use. When reserving my site through the weekend, saw on the reservation map that nearly all the sites were booked. After NY schools let out for the summer, I imagine the weeks will be busy also, so plan accordingly.
They have laundry facilities on site which are coin-operated (two washers, two driers). I did not see a change machine. $2.00 for "Supersize" wash load. $1.50 for 60 minute drier. Of course with the near constant wind off the lake, line dry is a good option. There is probably another laundry facility in the other building.
As the week has progressed, I've seen an increase in trooper patrols, which I appreciate. The place seems family friendly. There is a new-looking playground centrally located. While there is a chain-link fence along the shoreline cliff, be advised that the fence has many openings other campers have made, offering a dangerous temptation for younger kids. The cliff is sheer in places and drops about 15 ft. to rocks and pounding surf.
The sun sets on the water. Gorgeous. Thunderstorms are quite .............. memorable, if/when they roll through.
For amateur astronomers, while not exactly "dark sky", it's darker than I expected. Buffalo glows in the northeastern sky, but not too badly. Lots of open space. Milky Way visible. Great place to set up a Dobsonian telescope some weekend and treat the public to views of the planets.
While the buildings are well-lit, there is no extraneous lighting in the camping areas, aside from campfires, of course. The wooded areas are fairly clear of underbrush, quite mossy. I saw lots of sticks and twigs to use as campfire kindling. One caution: I did see a lot of what looks like poison ivy in the woods, which might explain the abundance of sticks.
The drainage ditch/stream running along the edge of the tent-camping loop was chock-full of tadpoles (this is early half of June). I saw a woodchuck in the woods in daylight and a doe near one of the trails. After dark, I saw (likely) an opossum.
It's a nice place to camp, and I plan to return when...
Read moreWhen I arrived to set up at my RESERVED pavilion to set up and decorate for my sons graduation party a random group of 15+ people were having a cookout at my pavilion. I notified the park ranger on duty and our group had to wait 40 minutes while the park ranger talked the group into leaving the pavilion that I PAID FOR. This park ranger was incompetent in helping the situation and she stated "well the people cooking at ur site had the banquet room but they thought this was their site so if u want u can pay the difference that they paid for the banquet room and use their site, you'll just have to pay the difference" (of almost a $200 difference). No thank u. We explained that we booked this pavilion 3 months ago, we had a party starting in less than a hour at this pavilion and do not wish to be moved AND charged extra for it. The ranger had no understanding for the fact that we needed to get into our paid and reserved pavilion to prepare for our graduation party. We waited over 40 minutes while the park ranger apologized pleaded to the people who stole our reserved pavilion to move. When dealing with us she was very passive and condescending saying "well their gonna move soon, but there cooking right now" we again stated that we need to get into our reserved pavilion to prepare for a graduation party starting in less than a hour. And her response continued to be dismissing saying "well what do you want me to do"?....All while we sat under a random tree in the park WATCHING random people in our reserved pavilion drinking, grilling, and listening to music. Finally we threatened to just call the police and let them handle this because the ranger clearly couldn't. The ranger said "I already called" in a angry voice, and then again apologized to the other group who stole our pavilion. The ranger then walked away from the whole situation to "wait for the police near the road" (as she said) which was very unprofessional of her to leave a hostle situation. I am very upset with how...
Read moreRead moreI stayed at the campsite the weekend of August 5, 2016 of this year. I wanted to write this review earlier but lost my mom. I am a woman and traveled to New York to attend my NFL cheerleading reunion . I was a little skeptical to stay at a state park alone. However I felt so safe and secure being alone in the park. The park was absolutely beautiful. All of the roads were newly paved and the showers were remodeled and very nice. I didn't get a chance to do much in the park but did have the opportunity to run an 8 mile loop one of the days I was there. I ran from the campsite to the area where the beach was located in a totally different part of the park. The pavilions, parking area and park amenities were really nice. It is a great place for runners to get in a great run and if you run like me early in the morning. Look for the white tail deer that will greet you on the asphalt lane heading from the campgrounds to the beach. The park was crowded but the families were very civilized. I hate I didn't have much time to enjoy the park because my schedule for the reunion was so booked. I have stayed in many hotels and our event was held at the Adams Mark downtown Buffalo. Although the park was a good 40 minute drive from buffalo it was so nice to stay in my camper. I returned late each night from the reunion to the campgrounds and found it safe. Again, I am a woman who camped alone in the park with my travel trailer and have not been talking enough about how much I 've enjoyed my 3 night stay at Evan Gola State Park. If you want peace and tranquility, natural wild life yet close enough to enjoy the amenities of a big city but located far enough to embrace a country setting. DO NOT HESITATESTAY AT EVAN GOLA STATE PARK. Avid runners will love the newly paved road and distance from the campgrounds to the beach and public park...
