Very nice hike. Down to the lake shore and back was a little over 3.5 miles. The change in elevation is moderate, coming back up provided a nice little work out. The snow was deep enough that we could have used snow shoes, but we opted for micro- spikes instead. The hike was made easier by utilizing hiking poles also. The wooded scenery is very pretty. The lake was not frozen over, the water is crystal clear, there was a moderate fog enveloping the South end and the surrounding hills. The highlight was when two large, majestic, Bald Eagles soared fairly low overhead- what a fantastic sight! I will definitely return to this trail, really enjoyed it.    Read moreThis was a beautiful hike with butterflies, birds, rabbits, and other nature scattering the trails. Rivers, little falls (probably bigger in spring), and scenic ravines made the trek memorable. The hike is easy going down and amazing at hemlock being able to see nothing but trees and lake as far as your can see. Being able to refresh and relax at the lake, skip rocks, and just enjoy the view was needed though...as the hike back up was much harder, especially for those not used to steep terrain and inclines. Well worth it if you can, just know it's much harder...
   Read moreTrail was well-maintained although I wish people hadn't nailed Trail blazes into trees and instead painted them on like some of the older blazes. I also wish more blazes were on the going up hill side of the trees. There were several places where stepstones replaced where it might get muddy if it isn't as dry as it has been.
Definitely bring water, a charger for your phone if you plan on taking pictures. Swimming is not allowed at this part of the lake and there was a distinctive algae smell when I was there.
The Candice side of the trail could definitely use...
