A really lovely spot, great for a quick walk through some interesting habitat with beautiful scenery. Owned by The Nature Conservancy, this preserve protects a glacial lake and bog designated as a National Natural Landmark! Go enjoy a picnic at the picnic area or take the short walk around the east side of the lake to the boardwalk and explore the fascinating bog habitat full of carnivorous plants! As you follow the trail, you're brought through beautiful mixed hardwood-hemlock forest along the edge of the lake before reaching the boardwalk. Currently, the boardwalk is delapidated, but not totally unusable. Review would be 5 stars except for the boardwalk being closed. Though, I have faith it will be repaired soon! From The Nature Conservancy website: "Designated as a National Natural Landmark, the most outstanding feature of Moss Lake Preserve is its 15-acre bog lake. As the last continental glacier retreated some 15,000 years ago, a large block of ice was surrounded or buried by gravel carried by the glacier. The ice melted, leaving behind a water-filled depression. Eventually, a sphagnum moss mat grew over much of the open water, thus giving it the...
Read moreBeing a resident since 1972, i tend to take this kind of scenery and biome to be normal, except this goes beyond that. It's a bog.... A small lake/pond with peat. You can go with convention and say it's a glacial feature, or created by the impact of a huge chunk of ice blasted out of the Laurentide ice cap by the impact of a meteor fragment 12,800 yrs ago.... Either way it's been popular with Native Americans and even had it's own train depot for visitors to come and go. The bullhead are really what you've heard. Visitors have been known to feed them bread, while the geese snipe what they can, if the can be faster than the swarming fish. Several large snapping turtles regularly visit, and eat the bread as well as any slow catfish. There's a nice, mostly level trail around, and the last few hundred feet is usually muddy. Parking is small, and please think of your neighbors. We live here, and enjoy this...
Read moreBeautiful and serene walking trail! I love Moss Lake - been going there since I was born. It's beautiful, it's quiet, the hike is easy and not too long so it's great for kids. There's a cool boardwalk to go out onto the marsh. If you're quiet enough, you just might spot the massive snapping turtle that's been living there for years! Plus, for an extra bonus, bring some old bread to feed the catfish. Just don't get your hands too close. Please, please, please remember to leave no trace! Take all trash with you when you go and stay...
