We stayed at BVR this weekend for the Father's Day camp and ride. We LOVE to explore different places on horseback and have been all over the place in several different states. We call Wisconsin home and are lucky to have access to several different equestrian campgrounds. We were looking for something different to try and came across BVR at the recommendation of many.
The good: Certainly a beautiful area. Creek crossings are something we love to find and there are several. If you like hills, you will have plenty to explore here. Seems to be a variety of rigor to trails. Grounds are well-groomed/very clean. Amazing facilities, including safe, spacious pens, an enclosed Pavillion with yard games and grills, a beautiful shower house, a large arena, and their cabins look absolutely beautiful.
The not so good: I can't get myself to rate this place more than 3 stars for the complete lack of organization. Website has limited info, but capable to collect booking fees of course. No assigned campsites. No one to greet at check-in, inaccurate campground map (showing water tanks where there aren't any), couldn't find a dump station. Trail maps are a disaster. Trails are a maze with signage that is illegible in some places, completely off the map in others. For how much you pay (separate charges for campsite, electric use, EACH corral, and trail passes...for private land...on top of paying for each corral), I would love for them to invest in a better system to map out trails. We got lost with our young kids. I would not recommend this place with little riders. No fire pits or picnic tables at sites, and not allowed to have your own fire pit unless it's above ground. Sites are in an open field with zero shade for humans or horses.
I can see why this is a favorite to many (scenery is beautiful), but it was one of the most expensive places we've ever been with the least amenities and completely absent staff on one of only 4 or 5 weekends open for camping. The trail maps may not bother some, but are valued to us. If we come back, it will be to try one of their vacation homes with extended family. Appreciate the owners sharing their slice of heaven with us! Hopefully this feedback helps with improvements in...
Read moreWe stayed 6/19/18 to 6/22/18 at the Log Cabin. It was very cute, and the well kept grounds were very pretty. But my bed sheets were dirty, with a gross, dirty sock left in the bed. The coffee maker was unusable because it had not been cleaned and was full of fuzzy mold. I called the office at 0630 and left a message, plus three more times at 8,10 & 11.I received no call back, so then emailed Mitch, who did email me back, apologized via email, and who got the coffee maker replaced finally at 12:30pm. The bed linens were changed then also. When I emailed Mitch back, he wrote he only received one message from me, and essentially called me a liar. My calls to BVR were noted on my iPhone by time the call was made and how long it took me to leave my many messages. You should not insinuate I am dishonest, and you should NEVER mess with my coffee. The riding trails are wonderful, and the facilities are nice, but the customer service and cleaning service are less than acceptable. This was our fourth year staying at BVR, and our most...
Read moreThe property is beautifully kept and the house we stayed in had such a Positive vibe. There are great biking trails or horse trails, breathtaking scenery and you can even hook up to WiFi ( Why would you want too?? ) We had plenty to see and do in our cozy place that's nestled within over 900 acres of private land. There is a nice kitchen & bathroom and 11 of us Adventurers slept comfortably and had plenty off space to breath. We were a short drive to a laundry mat and within a half hour of a Walmart ( just in case you forgot supplies ) Also nearby there are kayak rentals and cave diving. Big Valley Ranch is a prime location for your adventurous needs and close by for your fishing & hunting as well. But if you want to just get away from the madness of life and relax, you will LOVE the beauty and tranquility of BVR. I Love this place and...
