At least trails and parking are free at HQ - unlike most places in the Kettle Moraine! There shouldn't be a fee (and certainly not to the extent they charge) to park your car on some gravel and walk on footpaths through public taxpayer...

We found out later from a condescending park ranger (who told us he was"living the life") that the noise was from a nearby gun range, the "largest outdoor shooting range in the Midwest". He said that if we could read, that we should have no problem with not wandering onto the range on our hike.
