Dangerous! I went snow tubing here for the first time with my wife and two children, ages 3 and 5. We ran into several unsafe conditions, including one that easily could have resulted in significant injury.
To get up the hill, you sit in your tube while it is is clipped to a guide rope - the guide rope pulls you up the hill. Our third or fourth time up the hill, when we were around halfway up, I noticed a child (roughly 8-10 years old) come careening down the "up" side of the hill in his tube. He slammed into my wife as she was ascending the hill clipped to her guide rope - she was blindsided since she was facing down the hill.
None of the staff noticed the accident or offered any sort of explanation as to how a rider ended up going down the wrong way. My wife was thrown out of her tube and left to escort the crying child down herself.
None of the staff noticed the accident or stopped the lift, and when I let the staff member at the top of the hill know about the collision, he shrugged his shoulders and just said "A bunch of kids just came through" as if that was an excuse for a safety violation. If you don't have enough people to monitor the slope and also assist with mounting/dismounting the tubes and doing traffic control on the slopes, maybe hire an additional staff member to oversee things?
While the above violation was the clearest and directly resulted in an injury, the slopes were also extremely slick and I hit the safety net at a pretty high rate of speed coming down. I also had a near miss on my second trip down when the ski guard decided to escort a child across my lane as I came down the slope.
We expressed our concerns to the supervisor and he gave us a refund and offered to have my wife checked out by the on site medical staff. She is a bit sore but we dont expect there will be any lasting damage. Still, we will definitely not be returning to Willard Mountain and we suggest you avoid it as well if you value...
Read moreI have been a skier at Willard mountain from the year the Wilson family purchased it. I went with my elementary school every Thursday. Years later, I became I ski instructor and even a PSIA. I understand they have new owners with new policies and I am not pleased with some of them in particular the tubing ticket purchases. As I was on the phone with the booking agent I was on the website simultaneously. It offered no place to make a reservation but it allowed me to buy tickets. Upon calling, I was informed that if there was no schedule, they are booked…so I asked…for the rest of the year? In a very flippant manner, I was told that it is only scheduled one week in advance. And they are only open on the weekends. So. Basically, don’t bother. I will be posting my audio call to my remote sight for those who follow me. They call is pretty comical. I hope they work out these issues, as over the years I have booked B large parties up there for birthdays, I had a Harley Owners Group party up there a few years back where there were 36 of us that planned in advance, went tubing, and probably paid about 13 of Chick’s mortgage payments with the bar tab. And then when we celebrated the life of a friend who was going to pass by spring. That was another 80 people. But with these new policies, this is not good. I contacted west mountain, I asked about hours. They said no problem, 7 days a week, less expensive and better experience. Contacted Jiminy, same thing, come any time and I could schedule my son’s birthday for March without a problem. So, I hope Willard shapes up. They have lost me as a customer until they can prove that they are capable of...
Read moreWillard Mountain is perfect for families with young children. It has multiple ski lifts including magic carpet, tow rope, and chair lifts. There is also a variety of ski trails for beginners and more advanced skiers.
I was impressed with all the staff. The cashier was very knowledgeable and recommended the most appropriate lesson once I described my children's ages and prior experience. The ski school instructors gave individualized instruction despite it being a small group. The chair lift operator made sure my children's restraint bar was lowered each time they got on.
The lodge is also very comfortable for parents to wait while their children ski. I noticed the heat was turned on and there was plenty of sitting room as Willard asks that their customers check their bags. The tables were wiped clean and garbage emptied multiple times in a few hour period. I appreciated the little touches to make our skiing experience more convenient including short-term parking to unload skis and baskets in the bathroom stalls to place gloves.
My children's friends are enrolled in the six week ski school program. I was delighted to hear that Willard canceled ski lessons last week due to freezing cold temperatures. The Willard management was looking out for their customers' best interest and not just making money.
My children are very excited to take their three cousins skiing at Willard in a couple weeks. This is our new favorite...
