Park in the designated area then a15 min Walk down a private road to the sign in box. Rocks and water bed walking. Lots of leaves. I wore my son's junky boots and didn't have a problem. 30 mins in all uphill roots and rock climbing stairs if you wanna call them that. Hour in things for wet and slippery trail is easily followed not really a need for trail markers. Super windy day very cold at the top and more open parts of the trail. Fantastic job restoring the tower love the pictures of the other mountains and their names and the topographical map table in the center. Even with the morning fog stop such beautiful view. Passed 1 guy coming down as I was almost to the top who gave me a encouraging good job! I needed it. This was my third fire tower. Good for wear is a must I have my handy stick but I still skipped down a few wet rocks. Be careful supporting yourself on trees, the to of one might break off and fall on you... Ya that happened. Loved this hike Lyon mountain is...
Read moreWe took the Northern trail up from Crow Clearing off of OToole Rd. This was my first Adirondack hike. I loved it! It's a challenging hike and very rocky. There had been a lot of rain in the area during the days leading up to our hike. The weather was beautiful for us, but the trail was very wet and muddy. There was a stretch where we were basically walking in a shallow stream because of the way the water was flowing down the trail. On the other hand, there were so many interesting mushrooms to see! At the top, the view is incredible. The fire tower is very solid and worth climbing up if you don't mind heights. Even on a perfect day like we had, I was glad I'd brought along my fleece to put on at the top. Well worth a visit if you enjoy...
Read moreWhoa gorgeous! You can see for miles into VT., High Peaks (Gothics & Giant Mtn) & probably NH! My kid was spent, this is a TOUGH climb from East trail (gate/house/.5 road walk). It's straight uphill after bridge, following a stream gully or occasional trail that becomes boulders for last .5 mile. NOT for faint of heart! I climbed fire tower but rushed back down 20 mins. where our kid waited. Take LOTS of water & bug spray, wear sturdy shoes & hat & you'll be rewarded w/ 360 stunning views. We saw 0 people...yay, & was 3.5 hrs. Very windy, watch your head @ top of tower but go for it! Bring snacks....
