As a visitor to this park we are trying to still figure it out. We had a great time just going for a walk. It's the middle of July and we thought it would be busy with other adventures but what we found looked like an abandon Marina and beach where a serial killer stalked their next victim in a horror story. The park looks like it is mostly over grown and has been left in time. Maybe because we were at national parks recently and they are in much better repair and have a lot more visitors. Otherwise this park has a number of smaller trails to hike, has bike routes, a beach and a Marina on lake Chautaqua. There is a playground for the kids and fishing off the docks. We are even planning to go to a park event at night in the woods (this may be were out horror story starts 😀). We are hoping we just visited on a slow day and the state is working to keep up this amazing property. Update, our night hike event was a lot of fun. I think it was geared for little kids but hiking unfamiliar trails in the dark is fun for any age kids. We had great games and learned about some animals. Do you know the difference between eaten firefly's and Chinese firefly's? We do now.
We read that there was an entrance fee of$7 but the entrance gate was closed up tight and there was no entrance fee. Update, on sat and sun there is an entrance fee so go through the week if you can.
We would love to hear from the state parks or visitors about what's happening with this park. If you think our assessment of the park is pretty good mark this review as helpful. If you know more about the status let us know via IG @adventurekrewe. Hope you enjoy the park like we did. And at no cost...
Read moreChautauqua lake is one of the last pristine Waters in western New York only 20 miles away lake Erie empties into the st. Lawrence River and goes out into the Atlantic ocean just over the Continental divide is Chautauqua lake fed by artesian wells it has some of the best water in our state, the tributaries lead to the Mississippi River which empties out into the gulf of Mexico. this is truly the start of all the great water and fisheries in North America, the problem is without proper maintenance and regulation to the surrounding communities blue green algae will destroy what is left of the last pristine Waters of Chautauqua lake ,it would have got five stars for me if I didn't drive 2 hours just to have my trips sacked because of the blue green algae explosion. There is a muskie stocking program on the lake which helps add to the world-class fishery but honestly unless DEC steps up and takes control of the situation this lake will be alongside lake Erie as...
Read moreFor swimming and kayaking, go elsewhere. It's a beautiful park but it is definitely not kept up. There is no kayak launch and the boat launch they told us to use is very slippery, my sister actually fell it was so slippery. Then we get to the "beach" which is a loose use of the term. It is not sand, it's like sand mixed with crushed gravel. As soon as you reach the water line it turns into rocks. So make sure you wear water shoes. Also they do have a sign up to warn you that there could be sharp mussel shells in the water. The water temperature was perfect and the water was clear, but there was a ton of seaweed floating around in it. There were also biting flies EVERYWHERE Ps if you want to actually swim, don't go here. They have the water roped off at a max of 3 feet deep. 2 stars as an overall average experience.. I would give 0...
