Stunning waterfall that is off a spur trail. The normal trail walks through a field then another spur trail hugs the bluff line giving you great views of the river in the winter and spring. It would be interesting to redo the hike in the summer and see how the flowers are. It's a nice combination of prairie and woods. The last 1/2 mile of the road in to the trailhead was a little rough, a car made it in, but a few choose to park on the road and avoid the deep holes. To reach the falls, head straight out of the parking lot until you reach the dense tree line and the main trail turns left. You will see a well worn spur trail to your right and within a 100 yards you should see water and hear the falls. The trail gets very narrow and you climb across some tree roots to get to the top of the falls. There was a rope helping you climb down to the base of the falls.

Absolutely spectacular spot! Took a spur trail to the right at the treeline which took me along the bluff to get to Buttermilk Falls. It was a little longer than the main trail but a relatively moderate hike. The climb down the rope to the bottom was fairly easy and fun. Had the place all to myself, which is always a plus. My favorite waterfall I've seen this year, so far. There are no garbage cans so please take your trash with you. Did not see a single piece of garbage anywhere there, which is pretty awesome. Speaks volumes to the isolation and serenity of this gorgeous place. Can't wait to go back!

GREAT little hike!! Very easy for the first bit (wide, flat) then it gets a bit more treacherous to the top of the falls (see pictures). There are a few ropes tied if you want to try the descent to the falls--my 70-year-old mom made it to the top with her hiking sticks and some help, but did not attempt going down to the foot of the falls. My 67-year-old father made it down and back up no problem. Overall, a great hike. Mosquitos were not bad at all (especially compared to a previous hike in the area) and we found no ticks! 🙌
