Hidden Gem! The Peter Whitmer farm is one of several regional historic sites dealing with the founding of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), their miraculous early beginnings, foundation, and eventual trek west. This 100-acre farm is 30 miles from other Mormon historic sites but due to its context plays a significant role in the Church's history as this is where the church was founded with 6 original members, large portions of the Book of Mormon were reported to have been translated here, and this farm served as a Church headquarters for a few years. This visitors center is off the beaten path in the middle of farms and Mennonite communities. It requires a deliberate drive. The farm currently hosts a chapel for a local congregation as well as a visitors center with video and technological presentations ideal for families and children, as well as a replica farm home for tour. The Church, visitors center and farm house sit on the original 100-acre Whitmer farm. The farm is rented out to local soybean farmers. The center offers free tours, outdoor picnic area, and clean restrooms during its hours of operation. Check the schedule and show up during scheduled hours as there aren't options for self-guided tours.
From 6 original members in 1830 to over 16 million in 2021, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been one of the world's fastest growing religions over the past 190 years and this quiet rural farm is where it...

Β Β Β Read moreThe missionaries were great and the area is beautiful, but there is very little tp see in this site. Most of the tour is a 20 to 30 minite video regarding the Whitmers, and the only historic site is the home, which doesnt hold anything incredibly interesting over the other LDS historic sites.
Though an interesting site which is integral to the historical narrative of LDS history, the Whitmer Farm ultimately is not as interesting as a physical site to visit, though it is certainly a necessary site to visit for LDS history tourists...
