Light and airy yet compact visitor center that offers a modest introduction to the Mohonk Preserve. The approximately 10 minute film shown at the entrance is a nice touch. One can look out the big windows although the view is somewhat limited. The children’s discovery center has turtles and a number of stuffed creatures. It is hard to compare this center to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake near Sarnac which just astounds and can take up an entire day. However, as a privately funded organization this certainly goes above and beyond the typical park center. Your kids will enjoy a short time there and then be best served by taking them on the trails.

Review Aug 2025: Last Saturday, August 2nd, I had the best experience ever at a visitor central - and one of the best support I ever got in any circumstances. Jerry and Gerald were awesome and went way out of their way not only to help me plan the best hikes for me but also with some other issues that I had.

The preserve is just amazing with stunning view - and I enjoyed again the carriage roads.

Review Aug 2024 The nature and hikes are around are awesome. Views are gorgeous and very easy to get to. There are a lot of carriage roads (you can also bike) and also paths (though they seem very narrow in the area).

The center has maps - free and more detailed to buy and inside there is a 3D map. However, the gentleman who helped me did not seem to actually want to do that - he was impatient, even though it was not busy and I told him I can wait for other folks and it was my first time in the area. When I asked for some clarifications he told me: I already gave you printed instructions....

The mountain and mountain house are extremely beautiful and worth checking out but the gentleman at the front desk of the visitor center on 11/04/20 was the most unhelpful person ever. Clearly my husband and I were new to the area and he basically acted like we should know where we want to go. All I’m saying is, if you’re going to be claiming natural land as yours at least have good friendly service. No suggestions, no warnings, no advice, no help... we ended up on the hardest possible trail and if not for being in shape we probably could have gotten seriously injured.... also seem to be more “Covid Mask reminders” scattered around than actually trail signs. I thought this was a natural family experience, more like moody outdoor...
