Long Branch Park is along the western shore of the Onondaga Lake Outlet. Not to be confused with Onondaga Lake Park, Long Branch Park was originally founded as an amusement park in 1882 by one Mr. George Maurer. An avid lover of chestnuts, chestnut trees, and the whimsical fancy of amusement park rides, and attractions George wanted to provide the sodium-chloride workers of Syracuse a reprise from their work days. As the sign above the entrance pleaded with those who came “Let All Who Enter Here Leave Care Behind.” The park included boxing arenas, arcades, bowling, trolley rides, carousels, billiards, ice boating (only in winter), and row boating. Oh, the row boating. Nothing this splendid can last forever and long have been absent the aforementioned attractions since the amusement side of the park closed in 1938. However, still today you can catch a ride on the restored original #18 Carousel that finds its home in the Destiny USA shopping mall. Read moreMy children almost got hit by a maintenance guy, caucasian in his forties, clean shaven with glasses, and a high visibility sweater. We were walking towards the rowing team faicility, before the bridge over pass when this guy in the the John Deere cart came speeding through from our left faster than anyone I've seen driving on the pedestrian walkway and my son was no more than 3 feet from him and my teenage daughter was thankfully holding my youngest daughter. I called the park rangers and they stated they would take care of it. Hopefully they do. My advice is to be aware of this at that park. These guys will not care if they hit you or your family. Read moreIt was a beautiful day on the boardwalk. People were sunning and playing with dogs on the beach. Didn't see anyone brave enough to go into the ocean.The boardwalk is now open end to end, even though there is a fair amount of construction on new condo projects.I think I saw an Osprey dive into the ocean and I definitely saw a Seagull flying back to its nest with a fish.The restaurants on the boardwalk seemed to be doing a reasonable business seeing how early in the season it was and at least 2 restaurants had oitside seating open in the afternoon.Police put warning notices on cars that were parked along the ocean ave who were not in numbered spots.
