The trail can be hard or moderate depending upon the conditions if its hot and humid it will definitely be hard. The climb to cascade and porter junction or to cascade mountain is a steady uphill incline with some slab climbing to do in between and near the summit. The views from Cascade mountain are amazing which are unobstructed 360 views of the surrounding mountains. The trail to Porter mountain from the junction is very muddy and wet so be prepared to get your boots wet and covered in mud. The views from the porter mountains are good as well but not as good compared to cascade mountain. Did not use trekking pôles while coming down but these could come in handy. Remember, this is a wilderness area. You are responsible for yourself.
With only foot access in and out for miles, it will be a very long time to get you out if you injure yourself. So be smart. Be prepared. Know your limitations. Carry the '10 essentials' in your day pack. It's good to be in a fairly high level of fitness, too.

It's late March and sometimes nature surprises with fleeting opportunities to experience this winter wonderland near the town of Lake Placid where we stayed.
