Kettle Moraine State Forest – Pike Lake Unit has been one of my go-to spots for years, and I still love coming back. It’s not far at all, which makes it easy to stop by for a quick hike, swim, or even a whole day outdoors. The trails are well maintained and well marked, including a stretch of the Ice Age Trail, and hiking up Powder Hill to the observation tower never gets old; the views are fantastic. The sandy beach is clean, family-friendly, and has nice amenities like restrooms, picnic areas, and a playground. The campground is wooded, peaceful, and great for a weekend away. It’s definitely on the smaller side compared to other state forest units, but that actually makes it feel more relaxed and easy to enjoy. Read moreWe've been going to pike Lake Beach since my kiddos were babies. Have had yearly birthday parties/grad parties there for the past 25 years. The rental shelters are nice and the place is always well kept (beach, grounds, trails, etc). This is my go to place for peace and serenity. The new boat launch is fantastic. The tower has amazing views of the lake and as far as the eye can see of towns and cities. The DNR at Pike are some of the nicest, kindest people you will ever meet. They are always available to answer any questions regarding anything from 'where can I have the dog on premises to 'what kind of plant is that'?! '! Always great time there! Memorial day was very crowded though and was at capacity by noon ish. Very popular place for holidays and nice warn...
Read moreBeautiful place to hike. We took the brown trail that took us on the outer edges of the park (approximately 5+ miles). The trail is made up of several types of surfaces to include grass, dirt, sand, rocks, pea gravel, and hard - packed dirt. The forest is mezmorizing! There were lots of spiders (harmless daddy long legs). If you look close you may see a couple of deer, as we did. We saw several frogs, bees, butterflies, and a tiny brown squiral, as well. As you look around, look up, you may find a surprise laying in the Y of a tree. Don't forget to climb to the top of the tower for a breathtaking view. Pack a lunch and have a picnic at the base of the tower. If you look really close, you'll see the rusty remnants of old farm...
